SWITHENBANK, Elsie Vera "Bobbie"
December 12, 1925 - December 5, 2012
With great sadness, we announce the passing of our mother, Bobbie Swithenbank. She passed away peacefully in her sleep after a short fight with cancer at Stedman Community Hospice, Brantford, at the age of 86 years. Bobbie was born in Onoway, Alberta to Frank and Martha Roberts . She was the 4th of six children, Stewart, Laura, Fran, Shirley and Frank. She joined the military at 18 and was stationed to Camp X in Ontario during WWII. Camp X was Canada's top-secret espionage training base. She learned to decipher messages from spies behind enemy lines and was promoted to rank of Corporal. After the war, she met and married the love of her life, Leslie Swithenbank. Together they raised three children, Carol, Gail and Mark, in Burlington. She joined U-Haul Canada in 1966 as secretary, working her way up through the ranks to become president of U-Haul Canada in 1985. Bobbie loved to travel, visiting friends in Europe, South Africa and Australia. Another passion of Bobbie's was golf, which she learned when she retired. In 2006 Bobbie moved to Brantford to be close to her granddaughter. Bobbie is predeceased by her brothers and sisters, her husband Leslie (1969) and daughter Carol (1990). She is survived by her children Gail and Mark (wife Maggie), grandchildren, Michellle, Jeff, Robert and Luke and great-grandchildren Joshua and Matthew. A memorial service to celebrate Bobbie's life will be held at the McCLEISTER FUNERAL HOME, 495 Park Road North, Brantford, Ontario on Sunday February 3rd at 2:00 p.m. Her last month was spent in the loving care of Stedman Hospice.
