Graham MILLER Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Nov. 25 to Nov. 27, 2011.
MILLER, Graham Birnie
September 19, 1964 - November 9, 2011
Last November 9, Graham (Chopper) Miller was struck and killed while riding his motorcycle home from work. He was 47 years old.
Graham will be remembered by his father and brother, both of Toronto, and his many, many friends and students in Edmonton and Toronto and from around the world.
Graham was born in Pasadena California where his parents (both Canadians) were graduate students. The family settled in Toronto in 1966 where Graham was educated, becoming fluent in French in the process. His parents took him on many extended trips all over the world so that Graham developed an early familiarity with travel and other cultures. He first discovered (English) rugby in high school. This became a lifelong passion. After graduation from high school he worked in a restaurant, starting as the salad bar busboy and finishing as first cook. Next he worked as a courier and is still famous in those circles as being the highest earning courier ever.
Graham next embarked on a career as a helicopter pilot. After many years of crisscrossing Canada and the States on his motorbike looking for work, he ended up with Canadian Helicopters who had just landed the civilian support contract for the UN. Graham spent the next several years in some of Africa's worst disaster zones: Rwanda, Somalia and Mozambique. He had wonderful stories of his many fixes (usually of his own making while on leave!).
When this contract came to an end Graham, finding himself at loose ends, agreed to help out the family by moving to Edmonton to care for his ailing grandmother. Upon arrival he looked up the local rugby club, the Clansmen. He was instantly nicknamed "Chopper" (from his helicopter years, not his love of motorcycles as many thought) and became a club fixture.
He and his friend Robbie Lynch coached rugby at St. Francis Xavier H.S., an existing boys' side and a girls' side which they began. Both sides rapidly rose to Provincial prominence. He also enrolled at NAIT and earned a diploma in the area of information technology. While a student Graham was often asked for help from his classmates. In fact, NAIT hired Graham to tutor students who needed extra help while he was still a student himself. This led on his graduation to further contracts for summer school teaching and night school teaching, finally ending in a full time position. Graham had finally found his true calling. He won a major teaching award in 2005. About that time NAIT sent him to China to teach at their program in Harbin. Again Graham had found an enduring love. He was well received there and was learning Mandarin and Chinese characters. Looking to increase his education, Graham took a sabbatical and went to Cardiff University in Wales, earning his Masters degree in 2009. Back home he was teaching and planning a new course at NAIT when he was killed.
There will be a Tribute held January 7, 2012 at the NAIT Shaw auditorium at 15:30 followed by a reception at the Clansmen Rugby Club a short distance away.
NAIT has established a Graham Miller Memorial Fund. Donations should be addressed to NAIT, c/o Sabrina Giordano, 11762 - 106 Street N.W., Edmonton, AB, T5G 2R1.

You were such an awesome and caring instructor. I will never forget your stories during class. Because of you I can still read and draw flow charts accurately...and I'm not even in the IT field anymore.

Rest in peace Graham.

I first met Graham at Ceili's Pub where I hung out with my biker buddies. With much sadness, I just learned today of Graham's passing, although I haven't seen him for a long time, I feel as if I've lost a brother.

He was a unique personality that will never be forgotten, my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

No words can lessen the tremendous loss you must be living through. How he lived his life made a tremendous difference to everyone he came in contact with.

Graham was one of the sweetest and most interesting people one could ever meet. A man whose large stature was dwarfed only by his passion to be am incredible teacher, and by the sheer size of his heart.

We graduated together, and later that summer after running into you, and you telling me about your new job at NAIT - you helped lead me to the most rewarding job I have ever had.

You truly were one of a kind, and though I know there were lonely times for you as well, I hope you may rest in peace knowing that you had a positive and lasting impact on hundreds if not thousands who loved you, of which I'm proud and honored to be one.

RIP Chopper

My husband and I knew Graham through NAIT where he taught us SQL. He was one of the most engaging teachers we've ever had. He loved to teach and help...and it showed. His enthusiasm and passion were infectious. If only all educators were as crazy as Graham. We're so sorry for the loss of Graham - he always burned so brightly.

Graham - you were a huge part of my life - but time and distance saw us drift apart. I will never forget our serendipitous meeting in Canberra, Australia outside the war museum, in 2003. You were a good friend Peace. Doug Crosse -

I came to know Graham through the rugby club, and we played together and socialized together for the past dozen years or so. Graham was a very giving and selfless individual which was demonstrated time and again through his involvement with the rugby community. I was able to correspond with him while he spent his time in China, and was amazed by his willingness to take on this opportunity. My heartfelt condolences go out to Graham's family and all his other friends.

You were my Photoshop teacher in my first semester of Digital Media and IT at NAIT. You were the most helpful and caring person out there. You always helped when I needed help, and you never gave up on me. Because of you, I am able to do more than I ever thought I could.

You were an inspiration to me and my fellow classmates.

I will miss seeing you in the NAIT hallways.

We were next door neighbours. It is so hard to believe that one minute you can be here and the next gone... a light remains on as well as a humble tribute has been left in your honour... I remember our conversation well the afternoon of that ill-fated Wednesday...

You were a warm and gentle soul, truly genuine and so passionate about teaching. It will be extremely hard to go past your office everyday, let alone work in the office next door –you are a tribute to do better. Thank you for making a difference my friend.

RIP my colleague and my brother-in-arms. "Victory" is yours here and beyond.
