It is with heavy hearts that we announce Ken's passing, on the second Sunday of Advent, which is Peace.
Ken was born and raised in Edmonton, where he met his loving wife of 27 years, Debi. Following their marriage, Ken and Debi laid the foundation for their family in Sherwood Park, becoming active members of the community and raising children Colin and Kristy, whom Ken adored.
Ken started his teaching career at Jean Vanier Catholic School in 1988 and returned in 2008; where he remained Principal, until the end of his 25 year career with Elk Island Catholic School District. He was a passionate educator, mentor and leader who made the world a better place, one life at a time. Ken was an active member of the community, volunteering at school and church, coaching various sports teams and more recently, helping to raise awareness while fundraising for Cancer associations across Alberta.
Ken was an avid traveler, lover of sports and someone who lived every experience to the fullest. He will be remembered for his strength, courage and faith, as well as his unwaveringly positive attitude and deep love for his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Debi; children Colin and Kristy; parents Henry and Lorraine; sisters Christine (Duane) and Sherry (Peter); brothers Ron (Bonnie) and Gord (Anna); brother-in-law Tim; Debi's parents Dorothy and Tom; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends.
The Szopa family would like to thank The Cross Cancer Institute, Grey Nuns Hospital, Strathcona Home Care, Provincial Home Oxygen and the incredible team of doctors and nurses that positively impacted Ken's journey. After a long, courageous and inspiringly fought battle with prostate cancer, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cross Cancer Institute via http://albertacancer.ca/ kenszopa.
A Service will be held to celebrate Ken's life on Friday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m., as well as a Liturgy and Reception on Saturday, December 15 at 12:00 p.m. Both at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, 13 Brower Drive, Sherwood Park, AB.
We will miss your kind heart and inspirational outlook on life. It's easy to be heavy: hard to be light - Perhaps your most important lesson and something we will strive to live by, in your honor.
