Surrounded by family, Leona Bulat of Edmonton, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years following a valiant fight against acute leukemia.
Leona will be sadly missed by her son, Gordon (Lana) and daughter Lorraine Young (Eric), her eight grandchildren Dan (Heather), Daren(Roxanne), Duane(Jennifer), Chantel(Jeff), Sydney, Arden, Clare and Jill and nine great grandchildren Gordie, Natalie, Mitchell, Claudia, Taryn, Emma, Stephan, Jack and Jovie all adored her and affectionately called her Nana. Leona is also survived by her sister-in-law Mary Dutton and several nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Steve (1991), her brothers Peter and Walter Kutch and her sister Anne Germaniuk.
Leona was born in Leduc and lived for some time in Calmar and Busby before marrying Steve in 1941 and moving to South Edmonton. On the southwest corner of what is now 142 street and 23 avenue they operated Bulat Sand Ltd. for over 25 years. Leona and Steve worked as a team to make the business successful. Leona loved gardening at the farm, golfing and bowling. An avid cook, the freezers were always stocked with her homemade perogies , cabbage rolls and pies, ready to serve to family and friends.
In their later years Steve and Leona enjoyed many holidays with friends in Kihei, Maui and then in Sun Lakes, Arizona.
The family wishes to thank the staff in unit 5F4 at the UofA Hospital for their care and compassion. A special thanks to Terry Villaluna, mom's companion during her illness, for her devotion and love. As per Leona's request, cremation has occurred. The family will celebrate her life in a private gathering. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Leona's memory to the Cross Cancer Institute, 11560 University Ave. Edmonton,Ab. T6G 1Z2.
