SOBKOW, Walter J.
June 25, 1921 – December 21, 2012
On December 21, 2012, Walter Sobkow, at the age of 91 years, passed away peacefully with his family by his side.
Walter will be forever missed by his children; daughters, Terry and Cathy; and son, Ken. He leaves behind one grandson, three great-grandchildren; special brothers- in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews as well as numerous other family and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Wanda and son, Chris.
Walter served five years in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II as a leading Stoker crossing the Atlantic many times aboard Corvette escort ships and many years later retired as Assistant Chief of the Edmonton Fire Department after 35 years of service. Walter will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and quick wit. From a grateful family, a very special thank you goes out to the staff of "angels" who work at the Kipnes Centre for Veterans where Walter called home for almost two years. They gave him such wonderful care and compassion.
A Celebration of Walter's Life will take place Saturday, December 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 - 111 Avenue with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Capital Care Kipnes Centre for Veterans, 4470 McCrae Avenue, Edmonton, AB T5E 6M8.
