On February 11, 2014, Erich passed away in Edmonton at the age of 74.
Survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan Florentine (née Bochenko); his daughter, Annemarie Erika; son Marc (Alex), granddaughters Olivia and Evelyn of Fort McMurray, brothers Emil (Alice), Gustav (Ruth) and Alfred (Penny); sisters Olga Baumann, Erna (John) Straub, Elfriede Franz, Adeline Didack and Donna (Vic) Schneider and numerous nieces and nephews.
Erich was predeceased by his father, Gustav, in 1963; his mother Berta (née Schultz), in 1974; sister Elli Weinheimer; brother Adolf, and brothers-in-law Gustav Weinheimer, John Baumann, Helmut Franz and Nick Didack.
Erich was born in the settlement of Quirinowo, Poland (now Wilcze Katy) on March 25, 1939. In January 1945, the family trekked over 800 km in a horse-drawn cart from Poland arriving in Western Germany in early April.
In May 1948, the family left Bremerhaven, West Germany on a ship named "Beaverbrae" and landed in Quebec City on June 4, 1948 before travelling by train to Redcliff, Alberta.
Erich went to school in Redcliff and Medicine Hat before moving to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1962 and took a one year after-degree in Education at the University of Calgary. He married Joan on August 3, 1963 and they settled in Calgary where he taught German, physics and chemistry in high school and junior high science.
In 1973, Erich returned to the University of Alberta to attend law school. After passing the bar in 1977, the family moved to Peace River, where Erich worked as a Crown Prosecutor. Ten years later, he entered private practice as a criminal defence attorney. Erich retired in 1999.
Erich was chairman of the Peace River Health Authority, chairman of the Peace River Historical Society, a member of the Peace River Centennial Museum board and a member of the Town of Peace River Development Appeal Board.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Emergency Department at the Peace River Hospital, the members of the air ambulance crew, and the staff at the Cardiac Care Unit of the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
A funeral will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 7:30 PM at Hainstock's Funeral Home, 9810-34 Ave NW, Edmonton. A memorial service will be held in Peace River, Alberta, on the afternoon of Saturday, February 22, 2014.
