The family announces, with great sadness, that Lydia Ofner passed away with courage and dignity on November 15, 2012 from complications of her cancer.
Lydia was born in Usona, Alberta on August 30, 1916, living in Edmonton for almost 80 years of her life and in St. Albert the last year and a half. She will always be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Margaret Mrazek and her son, Lawrence (Patricia); as well as her four grandchildren, Jacqueline, Heather, Monique and Byron and her very special great-grandchildren, Alexander and baby Sophia. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Olga Schweitzer and many dear nieces and nephews each of which held a special place in her heart.
Sadly, she was predeceased by her husband, Frank in 1985; her son-in-law, Norbert in 1991; her special son, Paul in 2006; as well as her father, Henry and mother, Euphrosine; her sisters, Tilly, Emma, Hilda, Bertha, Frieda and Margaret and her brothers, Eduard, Gus, Robert, Henry, Art and Paul.
Lydia enjoyed travelling and seeing new things and especially loved long drives in the country. She also was a devoted supporter of the Edmonton Oilers attending all games for the past 20 years and was waiting so hard for this season to commence. She was a woman of humor, love and compassion. She was happiest when surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who she spent much time looking after.
The family would like to thank Dr. Allen Ausford for his loving care he provided to Lydia for so many years. We would also like to thank the staff at Rosedale, St. Albert for providing mother with excellent care and allowing her to be independent in a supportive environment. A special thanks to the staff of 7 West at the Misericordia Hospital who provided care for Lydia in her final days of life. The care provided to our mother was outstanding and we truly appreciated the support each of you provided to the family. The family is grateful to all who in any way touched Lydia's life and as our always gracious mother would say, "thank you".
Prayer Service for Lydia will be held on Thursday, November 22, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at Connelly-McKinley ~ St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive, St. Albert. Reverend Andrzej Stendzina, OMI, Reverend Vic Perron and Reverend Len Gartner will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, November 23 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Albert Roman Catholic Church, 7 St. Vital Avenue, St. Albert. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to St. Joseph's Auxiliary Hospital for the Day Support Program which Lydia so enjoyed attending two times a week for the past three years or to the Salvation Army that helped Lydia's family when she was a child, or Rosedale Recreation Society for use of residents in Rosedale, St. Albert where Lydia has resided since February 2011.
To send condolences:
