WALKER, Wilfrid (Wilf) Allan
Wilfrid (Wilf) Allan Walker died December 13, 2012 in Edmonton at age 89.
He was not just a good man, but a great man. He was predeceased by his parents, O.J. and Ella May Walker and his wife Mar (Macleod) in 2004 and his brother Jim in 2009. He is survived by his children: Mac, Sally and Katie (Andy) and his grandchildren: Michael (Annie), Meghan, Rebecca, Jerett, Emma, Jacob and Hannah. He is also survived by his niece Jean (Kim), great-niece Joanne, great-nephew Christopher as well as Rita Kopecky, his dear friend and companion for the past eight years.
Wilf attended Garneau Public High School and the University of Alberta. He enjoyed various careers beginning with the Fleet Air Arm in 1943 and was still undergoing pilot training when WW11 ended. After the war, he completed his BSc, worked as a fisheries biologist and went on to complete his Master's Degree in Food Technology at Oregon State University. He and Mar lived in Seattle for four years and moved to Calgary in 1954 as they missed seeing the Alberta sky.
After a brief stint in the food industry in Calgary, Wilf and Bruce Lang founded a clothing sales company, Lang Walker Sales. It expanded north in 1958 and Wilf became the sole manufacturing agent in Edmonton. His last 14 working years were with Alberta Agriculture, International Marketing where he got to use his graduate education and see the world. In the 60's, he co-founded the Overlander Lodge near Jasper Park Gate.
Jasper was a huge part of Wilf's life since childhood and he has spent many happy times at the family cabin at Lake Edith. Wilf embraced retirement and continued with his many hobbies, including stamp collecting, hiking, badminton and tennis. He developed a passion and talent for painting thus the nickname "Pablo". Wilf lived life to the fullest; he travelled the world, read voraciously, enjoyed music and theatre and was a great conversationalist. He played tennis up until two weeks before his death.
A Memorial Celebration of Wilf's life will be held at the Royal Glenora Club, 11160 River Valley Road, Edmonton AB on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Edmonton and District Historical Society, 3rd Floor, 7730 – 106 St Edmonton, AB T6E 4W3.
