Roy Alexander Findlay, beloved husband of Muriel Findlay, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 1, 2013 at the age of 98 years.
Roy was born on March 5, 1915 at 04:00 hours on a lone Alberta farm near Ryley, Alberta. He has farmed with horses and lived on a homestead with no electricity or running water. He moved to Calgary on November 13, 1959. Roy held many leadership roles during his lifetime; President of the Westgate Community Hall (1964-1965), a graduate of the Vermilion School of Agriculture where he held various sports related positions on the student council, Past Noble Grand Chairman of the Ryley Odd Fellows Lodge, Captain of many baseball clubs that he played for such as Ryley and North Edmonton. As a good hockey player, he was invited to the Cleveland Barons Pro Camp and in baseball was invited to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball organization, but WWII intervened and he ended up in the RCAF instead. He was a Flight Lieutenant, Pilot, Instructor and DC 3 aircraft Commander of Air Transport Command 436 Squadron and was posted overseas during and after WW II. After the war, he was active in both the Army and Air force Reserves. He was Director and three time President of the Lions Club of Calgary as well as being inducted into the Lions Hall of fame. In his professional life in the agriculture business he was grain buyer, Superintendent, travelling Superintendent and Manager of the Seed Fertilizer Division of the Alberta Wheat Pool; President, Director and Manager of the Calgary Flying Club; President of the Western Seed Trade Association; Director of the Canadian Seed Trade Association; Director of the Field Seed Institute of North America and Member of the Federal Seed Trade Mission to Latin America.
Roy will be lovingly remembered by his dear wife of 65 years, Muriel; two sons and daughters-in-law David and Joan and Donald and Debbie; three grandchildren Donald Jr. (Kyla), Daniel (Kim) and Alexandra; great-grandchildren Declan, Haven and Dane and extended family Heather, Michelle and Kelton.
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens "Field of Honour".
