George Chelmick, of Edmonton, passed away at the age of 91 on April 3, 2013. George was deeply loved and cherished by family and friends near and far and was widely respected for his generosity, wisdom and thoughtfulness. George was a true gentleman.
George Chelmick came to Alberta in 1944 for pilot training with the RAF. He fell in love with a wonderful Canadian and with the country itself, seeing opportunity and eager to contribute his talents to its growth. And contribute he did: as a building inspector, utilities company manager, Public Utilities Board member and Edmonton Tax Assessment Board member. Over the years he was a dedicated volunteer in the Edmonton Flying Club, an avid golfer, curler and fitness devotee. A great love of learning lead him to earn two degrees through distance education (McMaster and Athabasca). Above all he was a devoted husband and father.
George is survived by Mary, his beloved wife of 68 years, sons Tom (Valerie) and Rob (Janice), grandchildren Chris (Rebecca), Alanna, Heather (Veronica), great-grandson Declan and brother Ernest (Patricia) of England. He was predeceased by his son David and brother Gordon.
A Celebration of George's life will take place at the Woodvale Community Facility at the Millwoods Golf Course (4540 – 50 Street, Edmonton) on Monday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m.
