BROTEN, Louis Joel
Louis Joel passed away quietly surrounded by the love of his family on May 7, 2013 in Edmonton, Alberta at the impressive age of 99.
Louis was an active community leader involved as past president of the Calder Senior Centre, columnist for the Edmonton Senior paper, author, seniors advocate, political activist, international union leader, CNR railroader, WWII veteran, Saskatchewan homesteader, loving father, proud grandfather and caring neighbour.
Predeceased by his devoted wife of 68 years, Vera Broten, and remembered in love by his four children, Kenneth (Fay) Broten, Donna (Roger) Vienneau, Melvyn (Debra) Broten, Lorraine (Ken) Kibblewhite; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his youngest brother, from a family of six, Norman Broten.
Lou was a strong man both physically and in character. He was a firm believer in standing up for what he thought was right and for trying to make the world a better place for all. The Funeral Service to remember Lou will be held at Evergreen Funeral Chapel, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton, on Monday, May 13, 2013 starting with a viewing one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, 11560 University Avenue, Edmonton, AB T6G 1Z2.
