Donald GAUF Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Oct. 18, 2014.
GAUF, Donald Valentine
January 1, 1927 – October 11, 2014
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Donald Gauf. Don is survived by his loving wife, Joan (nee Smith); two children, Jeffrey (Barbara) Gauf, Nadine Gauf; and adoring grandchild, Macgregor Gauf. Don was the son of the late Jacob (Jack) and Adella Gauf. He was predeceased by his sister Jennie (Thomlinson) and brothers, William (Bill), Ernest (Ernie), and Robert (Bob).
Born in Edmonton, he grew-up in Fort Saskatchewan and started his dairy business under the Bar 4 Ranch.
Always a business man, his life took a change and he went on to enjoy many years as a partner and fleet/truck manager of Waterloo Mercury.
Don played as a defenseman on the Edmonton Mercurys hockey team that won the World Ice Hockey championship in London in 1950 and the Olympic Gold Medal in ice hockey in Oslo in 1952. Don remained active his entire life; in the early years with baseball and hockey and later with curling, skating and golf. He was a member of the Edmonton Country Club for many years.
He and Joan shared many family holidays in Hawaii where Don had the pleasure acting as an Honorary Grand Marshall at the Hawaiian Open. He took great enjoyment in the company of his family, especially his only granddaughter. Don developed many life-long friends not only through sports and business but also with the Freemasons, Empire Lodge No. 63 and will be sorely missed.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Edmonton General Hospital for the care given to Don.
No funeral service will be held. Cremation will take place. A Celebration of Don's Life will be held at the Edmonton Country Club, 6201 Country Club Road NW, Edmonton on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 2:00pm- 4:00pm.

Joan, Jeff and Nadine, we were saddened to hear of the passing of Don. Dad always considered Don a true friend and they shared a lot of great times together. Lots of " Donnie Gauf " stories were shared by my Dad, the vast majority of them were very humorous. It is tough to see anyone suffer with Alzheimers and we know he is in a better place now.
Take care

Deepest Condolences to the Gauf Family. Don was one of those 'larger than life' friends of my Dad,, They are probably sitting around 'chewing the fat'right now with as many of the old team as they can find, I was always in awe of all of them. Hugs from Bob Ford (son of Monty Ford)

I am truly very sorry to hear of the passing of Don. I worked at Waterloo during the '70's and he was really a pleasure to work with and for. He was a very dedicated, caring person who had a warm hardy laugh. He spoke of his lovely family fondly and often. He always had a soft spot in my heart. Gone but never forgotten.

Deeply sorry for the loss of Don.
We as a family had always been blessed to have such wonder neighbours across the street as we grew up.
Don was truly a pillar in the community.

I always enjoyed working with Don while he was Truck Manager at Waterloo....we had much fun putting deals together for the major fleet operators with whom he was well connected. He was a fine person to work with. Doug Johnston Light Truck Manager (retired) Ford of Canada Burlington Not
