Chastain, Larry - Rincon  
Mr. Larry Chastain, 73, of Rincon, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2015. Larry was born to the late J.C. and Virginia Chastain.  He was a 1960 graduate of Southwest High School in Atlanta. He lived in Cobb County before moving to Rincon four years ago. Larry had a successful sales career selling trucks for major manufacturers, founding JLC Trucks, and selling real estate.  He was a member of the Mt. Paran Church of God in Atlanta. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Annette Elliott Chastain; children, James Darron Chastain (Gina), and Kimberly Chastain Summers (Pratt); grandchildren, Christopher James Chastain, Anna Marie Summers, Walker Summers, and Weston Summers; brothers, W. Wayne Chastain, and Thomas D. Chastain; sisters, Sue Chastain Ivey, and Kathy Chastain Gaspard; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry L. Chastain.  The visitation will be Friday, Aug. 14, from 5-6 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel at the Walker Center of the Mount Paran Church of God located at 2055 Mount Paran Road NW, Atlanta. Drecktrah, Freddy H. "Opa" - Rincon  
Freddy H. "Opa" Drecktrah, 82, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2015 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Freddy was born Nov. 8, 1932 in Holtorf, Germany, to the late Dora Dierks Drecktrah and Heinrich Drecktrah. He came to America in April 1955 and he joined the Navy in October of the same year.  He became a U.S. citizen in 1957 and served four years active duty as a Navy Seabee in the South Pacific. After 20 years of faithful service, he retired in 1989.   He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 135 in Thunderbolt and No. 209 in Springfield. He was employed at Southern Nitrogen, Kaiser, and Fort Howard, where he retired. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Anita Williford; and sisters, Greta Wenzel and Anita Stork. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Bette Weston Drecktrah; children, Dora (Bill) Locklear of Kennesaw and Martha (Buddy) Horton of Rincon; grandchildren, Joseph and Kathryn Locklear of Kennesaw, Aubrey Chant of Auburn, AL, Madeline Chant of Savannah, Hannah, Emily, Maegan Horton all of Rincon; sister, Inge Stegleman of Germany; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins all of Germany. Visitation was Saturday, Aug. 1, from 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. in the chapel. Remembrances may be given to the USO,  www.uso.org

Dunaway, Eddie - Eden  
Mr. Eddie Dunaway, 75, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2015 at his home. Eddie was born in Ocala, Fla., to the late Ernest and Daisy Dunaway. He was a member of Powers Baptist Church, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He retired from Union Camp. Survivors include his wife, Maurice Dunaway of Eden; children, Marsha Brown (Gordon) of Clyo, Daisy Kenny (Pat) of Richmond Hill, Christy Crowe (Mark Sr.) of Wisconsin, Patsy Vashey (Thomas) of Savannah, and Viola Rae Rivenbark (Reggie) of Sylvania; step-children, Gary Parker of Effingham County, Constance Ball (Danny) of Florida, Donna Haupt (Howard) of Florida, Wayne Parker (deceased)(Theresa), Linda Beck (Gabriel) of Effingham County, Sandra Smith, and Bruce Parker (Angela) of Bloomingdale; 29 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 13, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral will be Friday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. at Powers Baptist Church located at 1104 U.S. Hwy. 80 in Eden.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Hinely, Lothare O. - Guyton  
Lothare O. Hinely died in the home of her loving family on Aug. 23, 2015. A beautiful and loving family, that she raised, sharing her faith as a devout Christian. She was 92 years old. Lothare is survived by her daughter, Wannette H. Yarbrough of Guyton; her two grandchildren, Chad Yarbrough and Tiffany Yarbrough. She is preceded in death by her husband, Warren Hinely of Guyton; her son, Kelby Hinely; her son-in-law, Roger (Tim) Yarbrough of Guyton; her parents, Richard and Janie Oliver; her two brothers, Hilton and Clyde Oliver of Collins and her three sisters, Lavi Strickland, Mattie Lou Barrow, and Emma Stevens. Lothare was born on Aug. 26, 1922 in Collins to Richard and Janie Oliver. Lothare was the last surviving child of Richard and Janie. During what came to be just short of 93 beautiful years on this earth, it was not only Lothare's large loving family that basked in the light of her faith and the graciousness she spread as a devout Christian but it was the many friends that saw the beauty in Lothare on the inside and out. Her love of life and the Lord was always apparent in the presence of Lothare. She had such a passion for life and love for everyone. In 1940, Lothare graduated from Collins High School. After graduating from school she went on to work for Sears & Roebuck Co. Lothare has such a passion for life and anything she set out to do that 22 years later she became a member of the Sears Retiree Club. As a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, she helped serve her Lord and those around her in any way she could. She worked on various committees and was a member of the Martin Nease Sunday School class and Bethesda Women's Association. Aside from her church home and family she was also a past member and president of the Marlow Friendship Garden Club. She enjoyed sewing, reading and gardening. Lothare passed away peacefully in her family home. She will be remembered as an excellent cook, a caregiver, a devout Christian woman, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, and one of the kindest people anyone could have ever had the pleasure of encountering. A viewing was set for Tuesday, Aug. 25 from 5-8 p.m. at Strickland's Funeral Home in Pooler. A funeral will be held at Bethesda United Methodist Church in Guyton on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m. Lothare will be buried in her family plot at Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery. Brother, Matt Waldron will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Lothare's life. Flowers can be sent to Strickland's Funeral Home in Pooler. Condolences can be sent to her loving family at 1025 Kolic Helmey Road, Guyton, GA 31312. Any donations should be made in her honor to Bethesda United Methodist or Hospice Savannah. Hughes, Sally Savannah - Rincon  
Sally Savannah Hughes, 30, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015. The longtime Effingham County resident was a loving mother, sister and friend. She is survived by her children, Joshua Herrington, Genevieve Herrington and Joey Stidhams; her father, Eddie Hughes;  brothers and sisters, Irene Pryor, Melissa Gonzalez, Robert Hughes, Ryan Hughes and Anna Hughes; step-mother, Donna Hughes; grandparents, Joseph & Mary Hughes; and many other relatives. Visitation was Thursday, Aug. 13, from 6-8 p.m. in the Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home Effingham Chapel. Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Rincon Cemetery.

Keen, Priscilla (Kitchens) - Guyton  
Ms. Priscilla Kitchens Keen, 64, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015 at Hospice Savannah. Priscilla was born in Washington to the late Medford Kitchens and Katherine Kitchens Benson. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Kitchens, and her step-father, Robert Benson. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, and employed at The Learning Treehouse. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include three children, Dana Smith (Dana Lee), Karla Keen Vance (Ed), and Jessica Keen; grandchildren, Evan Smith, Jude Merchant, and Nicholas Vance; sister, Cindy Simons (Tony); brothers, Glen Kitchens (Paula), Billy Kitchens (Darlene), Tommy Kitchens, and Ricky Kitchens. The memorial service will be Saturday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church. Visitation will be after the service. Remembrances may be made to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Layel, Clyde William - Springfield  
Clyde "Papa" Layel went to be with the Lord July 30, 2015 after a prolonged illness.  He was born in Gastonia, N.C. on June 10, 1936. He diligently served over 21 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was an active member of the Gideons and enjoyed handing out Bibles. He passionately served with the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief team, and went willingly whenever he was called including helping after 9/11 in NYC. He loved serving the Lord through many mission projects as an active member of the First Baptist Church of Springfield, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school superintendant for many years. His many hobbies included camping, hunting, fishing and bowling. He loved spending time with his family.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Coy and Tennesee Layel; brothers, Carl and C.L. Layel; and his sister, Evelyn Layel Noll. Survivors include his beloved wife of 56 years, Betty Layel; children, Teresa "Terry" Parker,  Tim Layel (Margaret), and Tonia Layel; six grandchildren, Luke Parker (Jennifer), Nicki Sullivan (Sam), Zack Tillery, Victoria Tillery, Julia Tillery, and Will Layel;  and one great-granddaughter, Abigail Sullivan. His favorite scripture was Isaiah 6:8. Visitation was Saturday, Aug. 1, from 10-11 a.m. in the funeral home. Memorial service was Saturday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Turner, Mary H. - Springfield  
Mary H. Turner, 64, died at Hospice Savannah on August 11, 2015, after a long struggle with cancer. Mary was born on March 4, 1951 in Martinsville, Va.  She graduated with an associate's degree from Saint Mary's College in Raleigh, N.C. She later pursued a bachelor of education degree and later a master degree of education from the University of Tennessee. She taught in Tennessee as an elementary school teacher for a few years before relocating to Savannah.  She taught in Chatham County for two years before taking a teaching job in Effingham County.  While in Effingham County she pursued an education specialist degree from Georgia Southern University. She taught English Language Arts at Effingham High School before transferring to Effingham County Middle School, where she retired after 31 years of service. She was a former member of the Springfield United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She later became an active member of the Jerusalem Lutheran Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles B. and Margaret B. Harper, and a brother, William (Bill) Harper. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Norman V. Turner of Springfield; two daughters, Audrey T. (James) Breda of Springfield, Georgia and Amy T. (Gary) Hart of Guyton; one grandson, Grayson J. Breda of Springfield; a brother and sister-in-law, Blain (Sue) Harper; a sister, Charlotte Harper all of Charlottesville, Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Dr.  Meg (Dr. Bruce Dain) Harper of Salt Lake, Utah; three nephews, Austin Hall, Matthew and Paul Harper of Charlottesville, Virginia; her mother-in-law, Mary Z. Turner of Springfield; a sister-in-law, Jocelyn T. (Richard) Porter of Guyton. Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 14, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. at Jerusalem Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Jerusalem Lutheran Church general fund, 2966 Ebenezer Road, Rincon, Georgia 31326.

West, John Howard - Guyton  
Mr. John Howard West, 93, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015 at St. Joseph's Hospital. John was born in Summerville and was preceded in death by his wife, Ira Nell West, and a son, Ronald H. West.  He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre.  At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was serving in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Oregon.  He was later an officer with the CCC Annual Convention in Pine Mountain for many years.   He retired from Union Camp.  He enjoyed being outdoors, riding his tractor, going to breakfast with friends, and listening to country music. Survivors include four sons, Michael A. West, Steven and Susan West, Jeffrey West, and Mark West; grandchildren, Amanda, Jessica, Logan, Dwayne, Julia and Jacqueline; several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Visitation was Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with burial to follow at Westside Memorial Gardens. Wilson, Calvin I. - Guyton  
Calvin I. Wilson, 80, passed away Monday, Aug. 17, 2015 at Memorial Health surrounded by loving family members. The Chatham County native was a member of First Baptist Church of Springfield, served in the U.S. Air Force, and was self-employed. He was preceded in death by his parents, E.G. and Eleanor Virginia Davis Wilson; and his wife, Elvie Shuman Wilson. Survivors include his daughters, Kelly (Lee) Rahn of Springfield and Kristie (John) Stern of South Burlington, VT; grandchildren, Troy and Ivey Rahn, Andrew and Kayla Stern; siblings, Gerald (Pat) Wilson, Gloria (George) Erickson, Sherry Dell (Gene) Clark, Sandra (Walton) White, Rosie (Mike) Saxon, Roxie (Jimmy) Herring, Charles (Libby) Wilson; and a number of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 21, from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. in the chapel.
