Ayers, Chip - Rincon  
Chip Ayers, 58 years of age, died suddenly last Friday, May 27, 2016. He died happy, quick and painlessly when his heart just stopped after a wonderful day doing what he loved best, fishing for cobia with his wife and friends. Chip was originally from Ohio but lived the last 25 years in Rincon. He worked at the Herty Foundation for 22 years and was a valued employee who enjoyed his job and its many challenges; he left behind his teammates who were also considered his family. He is preceded in death by his mother Lillian, father Eugene, and sister Carolyn Ewers from Fredericktown. He left behind his soul-mate Judy and son Nathan Ayers (Elizabeth Ann), daughters Ashley Greene (Adam) and Randi Brant (Jake), as well as two grandchildren Hayden Ayers and Wesley Moran. Extended family includes Rodney, Kassie and Dulcie and their families and brother-in-law Jim Ewers, whom he loved like a father. Services will be held Friday, June 3, at 3 p.m. in the Strickland Funeral Home in Rincon. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service.  Rev. Rick Wilson will be officiating. Bush, Joseph Lewis - Savannah  
Joseph Lewis Bush was called home to Jesus at 6:55 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, following a long illness. Joe was born on May 30,1931, in Bowdon and raised in Wetumpka, Ala. He was one of five sons and two daughters of Maggie and Lewis Bush. Husband for 58 years to Gisele Bush, father of daughter Lydia and sons Richard and Randy, grandfather of five grandchildren, Nicole, Gigi, Stacy, Cody and Casey and great-grandfather to six great-grand children. Joe served in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of sergeant first class over his 23 years of dedicated service, including one tour in Korea and two tours of duty in Vietnam. Following his military career, Joe served as a city building inspector at Radcliff, Ky., and both Savannah and Hinesville. Sergeant Bush was an avid hunter and fisherman that loved the outdoors and being on the water, as well as, a devoted family man who passed away with his loving family by his side. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 25, from 6-8 p.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home 7415 Hodgson Memorial Dr., Savannah. Funeral service will be Thursday, May 26, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Claxton, Hilda Ann (Hammock) - Rincon  
Hilda Ann Hammock Claxton, 71, passed away June 8, 2016, at St. Joseph's after a long illness. The Chatham County native was a member of First Baptist Church of Rincon and member of the Fidelis  Woman's Sunday School Class. She was retired from Memorial Health as a medical transcriptionist. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Joseph and Lessie Hall Hammock and her brother Carlton Hammock. Survivors include her husband, Dallas Claxton of Rincon; sons, Duane (Laney) Claxton and Keith (Theresa) Claxton all of Savannah; grandchildren, Kendall Claxton, Karlye Claxton and David Claxton.  Siblings, Jean Donnelly, Helen House,  and Hazel Singleton;  several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Billye Hammock. Visitation was Monday, June 13, from 10-11 a.m. at the Thomas Strickland Funeral Home on Highway 21 in Rincon followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. The family would like to thank the care givers at the offices of Dr. George Negrea and Dr. James A. Meadows III for their care during her illness. Freyermuth, Nellie (Dasher) - Bloomingdale  
Nellie Dasher Freyermuth, 94, of Bloomingdale and formerly of Garden City, died June 3, 2016 at the residence of her daughter. She was born in Marlow to the late George and Ethel Dasher, and was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Belton Freyermuth. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and the last few years, she had attended Zion Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Chancel Choir at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and took care of the Books for many years for the Sunday School. She was active on the Bereavment Committee, and was active on the Altar Guild of the church. She was very active in the Lutheran Ladies Guild, and she was always willing to help anytime, that something was needed for the Church. She loved her family, and she was a very dedicated wife, always helping her husband, as he prepared food for the Masons, Union Camp, and Church Functions. She was very active in her husband's 30th MP Company functions, with the U.S. Army. She is survived by a daughter, Charlene (Lyle), grandchildren, Victoria Elizabeth Davis (Justin), Eathen Derefes Davis, III (Dojuana), and Gregory Reese (Rebecca), a great-grandson, Westin Hoss Reese, three sister-in-laws, Lois Dasher, Margaret Freyermuth, and Deloss Freyermuth, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank her caregivers, Kit Lamb, Kim Adams, Patti Brown with 4Front Hospice; Ben Johnson, Klee Marks, Vanessa Patrick, and Kristie Whitley. Visitation was Tuesday, June 7 from 6-9 p.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Garden City Chapel. Funeral services are Wednesday, June 8, at: 4 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, with Rev. David Rasmussen, officiating. Interment will follow in Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery at Springfield. Pallbearers will be: Eathen Derefes Davis, III, Bruce Freyermuth, Glenn Dasher, J. W. Godbee, Betty Jeanette  
Betty Jeanette Godbee, 77, of Springfield, passed away May 13 at her residence, with her loving family by her side. The McIntosh County native was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband Franklin Godbee and parents Hubert and Gladys Tolbert. Survivors include her children: Doris Sanders (Mike), Donna Shirley (Maurice), James Burton, John Burton (Terry) and Dana Pevey (Terrell); 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held Sunday, May 15, at 2 p.m. at Effingham Memorial Gardens. Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Hales Jr., Marion P. - Savannah  
Mr. Marion P. Hales Jr., 68, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at his home. Marion was born in Savannah and grew up in Meldrim.  He was preceded in death by his father, Marion P. "Coot" Hales Sr., and a brother, Robert G. Hales Sr.  He grew up playing baseball in Effingham County, and enjoyed playing golf later in life.  He received an honorary doctorate degree in theology, and loved to preach.  He was a member of Harvest Time Church, was the owner/operator of Total Credit Repair, and formerly was employed with Candler Hospital for 12 years as a chief lab tech. Survivors include his mother, Lois Lane; wife, Sandra D. Hales; son, Jay Wesley Hales, and his wife, Melissa; step-children, Charles P. Kinstle Jr., Angela Bailes, Michael Kinstle, Christopher Kinstle, Michelle Kinstle, and Rachael Carter; many grandchildren; siblings, Dennis Hales (Sharon), David Hales, Kenny Hales, and Fran Hales Westberry (Derrell); sister-in-law, Patti Hales, as well as several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Thursday, May 26, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Friday, May 27, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Henry, Betty Ann - Rincon  
Betty Ann Henry, 80, died Monday, May 30, 2016 at her home. The Frankfort, Ky., native was a homemaker and a member of Corinth Baptist Church. Mrs. Henry loved caring for her friends at Willowpeg Village. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby W. Henry, Sr. She is survived by her children, Cynthia A. Gossard, Tony R. Henry, Bobby W. Henry Jr. (Kerry), Lisa J. Bires, and Onie R. Henry; a sister, Doris; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Thursday, June 2, from 5-6 p.m. in the funeral home. Funeral service will be Thursday, June 2, at 6 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Graveside service will be Friday, June 3, at 4 p.m. at Hollywood Cemetery in Orange City, Fla.

Kessler, Noel B. - Clyo  
Noel B. Kessler, beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, went to be with the lord on June 22, 2016. Noel was a lifelong resident of Effingham County. He faithfully served his country as a veteran of the US Navy and the Vietnam War. Noel had previously served his community as fire chief for the City of Springfield. Noel was most recently employed as a building inspector for Effingham County. Noel was also very active with the In Country Motorcycle Club, and participated in numerous charitable events to benefit veterans. He was also active in the American Legion Noel was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence J. Kessler Sr., and Christine Carr Kessler and his brother Brian E. Kessler. He is survived by his sons, Blake Garrett Kessler and Ashley Kliff Kessler (Libby) and his grandson, Gavin, his brother, Jerry Kessler (Gayla), his sister, Marla Tant (Kenny), his sister-in-law, Sheila Kessler, as well as several nieces and nephews. Visitation was Friday, June 24, from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Funeral services were Saturday, June 25, at 10 a.m. in the chapel. Interment followed in Springfield Cemetery Annex. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Kowalker, Heidi - Guyton  
Heidi Kowalker, 39, died Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Hospice Savannah. The Connecticut native was retired from the U.S. Navy, and continued as a top secret control officer at the Naval War College in Newport. She was a dedicated mother and cheer mom. She is survived by her  daughters, Caitlyn Kowalker-Eldridge and Chloe Kowalker-Elridge; her parents, Richard Kowalker and Rosemary Kowalker; brothers, Erik Kowalker (Amanda), Jason Kowalker (Alicja) and Larsson Baker (Lisa);  and several nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Remembrances: Hospice Savannah, PO Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.

Morris, Jimmy - Meldrim  
Jimmy Morris, 74, died Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Landmark Hospital. The Savannah native had worked at Sugar Transport for over 20 years, was a corporal with the Effingham County Sheriff's Department for 14 years, and served as county constable for the Effingham County Magistrate Court. He had served in the 165th Georgia Air National Guard.  Jimmy was an avid pilot. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Winifred Morris; his brother, Johnny Morris; and his sister, Beth Jones. He is survived by his daughter, Kristi Morris; step-daughter, Kim Smith; and other relatives. Visitation was Tuesday, June 28, from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 29, from 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment: Oak Hill Cemetery in Meldrim.
