Laura Caffo Obituary

Laura Caffo, 77, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2007 under the care of Hospice Savannah, Inc.
Mrs. Caffo was born in Effingham County, the daughter of the late Nellie Morgan and George Leroy Smith. Mrs. Caffo resided in Savannah most of her life and was the owner of Miss Nellies Antique Shop for many years. She was a lifelong member of Turkey Branch Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Caffo was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis P. "Moose" Caffo, and brother, George E. Smith.
She is survived by her daughter, Marchia Ward of Orlando, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Joe Bailey of Savannah; son, Paul Caffo of Savannah; daughter and son-in-law, Grace and Vernon Lanier of Ellabell; sisters, Leona DeLoach of Pineland, S.C., Helen Usher of Springfield and Geri Mahaney of Savannah; grandchildren, Jennifer Quick, Benjie Ward, Shelly Gilchrist, Amy Tacey and Becky Lanier; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service: 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.
Burial: Turkey Branch Baptist Church.

Diane,
I found the verse we were looking for at Hospice House.

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Galatians 6:9

Yesterday we were all sitting around at Judy's just talking and remembering all the times we spent as a family and how Aunt Laura seemed to be the glue that held the family together. She always wanted us to be strong in family ties and rely on eachother. In all her suffering she never faltered in her beliefs and love for her family. We all should take comfort in the verse and know that she isn't suffering any longer and that she is spending her days dancing, singing and praising God. Nothing can take away her happiness and contentment. She is reaping her rewards and praising God as her Savior. He was waiting on her with His arms opened wide rejoicing that another one of His children was at home with Him. I realize that your grief and loneliness is overwhelming at times but remember one day you will see her again and you will also be rejoicing and basking in God's glory with her.

Yesterday at Judy's for the 4th we did a lot if rememebering the times we all spent together and how Aunt Laura was always the backbone of the family. She never seemed to tire and always wanted the family to be strong together. That is one reason this verse means so much. She never gave up on things that were important to her and even though she suffered so much on earth she is now reaping the rewards that were stored for her in heaven. Man that sure is comforting to know. I hope you find comfort in these words and in knowing that Aunt Laura is in the hands and protection of God. No suffering just dancing, praising, singing and being in the presence of God and His children.

Many years ago when I served on the Chatham County Police Department, I met "Moose" Caffo as he also served with me. I also soon after met his wife. I remember when I was assigned to ride the Ogeechee Road as my division for eight hours I would often times eat at the DeSoto Truck Stop, owned my Mr. John Clark. Lara worked as a waitress there for many years. She took extra pride in waiting on us county oficers who chose to eat there. I will never forget her kindnes to me as a young officer who needed a home cooked meal at times!!!!! Thanks, Lara! I know you and Moose are now been reunited in Heaven!!!!!!
P.S. I wish I had had the chance to have let you know I am the Chairman of The Chatham County Police Historical Committee, Inc. and we are working on writing the history of the department and having it published in the near future! Moose will definitely be part of the book.
