Longtime resident of Pooler, Betty Elkins, passed away on Dec. 7, 2018, after a lengthy illness. Betty was 94 years old and was predeceased by her husband, Sam Elkins, and her parents, Frank and Willie Mae Miller of Pembroke , and two brothers, William O Miller and James Robert Miller.
Betty was the epitome of the stay-at-home mom. That role was important and the responsibility of rearing their three children. She involved herself in the children's activities in school as an active member in the PTA during their school years. Her children remarked: "Mom always knew where we were and what we were doing."
A longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Pooler, she was active in the various activities of the women's group. She taught Sunday School for children and the junior age group, the children's activities always found her working with them.
As a member of the WMU, Betty was involved in many mission and social activities. She took her role in the church as the wife of a deacon very seriously.
Betty was not only the "center piece stay" in her own family but, along with husband, Sam, was in that same role in latter days of the Miller family. "Mama and Pop" turned to Betty and Sam for the intimate family ties that they found important in the latter life.
Her last attendance to services at her church was when her family took her to a special service on a fifth Sunday night service (Sept. 30) with a program of singing old hymns. During the service, she experienced some difficulty and was then taken to the hospital by ambulance. She went from the hospital to a care home, where she died.
Betty is survived by three children: Bill Elkins, Shirley Rash and Diane Elkins, all of Pooler; she survived by a sister, Ruth Lee (Bill) of Springfield, and a brother, Homer Miller of Statesboro, and a number of nieces and nephews
Funeral services were conducted Dec. 11, 2018. Burial followed at Westside Memorial Gardens.
