RINCON-Erma Middleton "Nana" Bird, 87, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, at Memorial Health.

She was born Dec. 25, 1919, to Agnes and Forman Middleton of Ludowici.
She moved to Rincon in 1944 working for the Seaboard-Coastline Railroad. In 1945 she married Edwin Bird. She retired from Effingham County Board of Education after 25 years of service as a school bus driver. She served as the Justice of the Peace for Effingham County and was the first woman to serve on Town Council for the Town of Rincon.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Bird; her parents, Agnes and Forman Middleton; and brothers, Hugh and Hubert Gordon.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jo and William Griner and Marie and Jerry Graham; five grandchildren to whom she was affectionately known as "Nana," Meagan Griner (Chris Bragg), Britney Griner, Gina Pevey (Darren), Manning Graham, all of Rincon, and Genefer Graham of Pooler; two great-grandsons, Screven and Mason Pevey; several nieces and nephews and her extended family at Effingham Extended Care Facility.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Rincon United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow in Goshen United Methodist Church Cemetery.
