Inez Ruth Cardner Smalley, 91, passed away on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 at Effingham Care Center in Springfield.
She was born in Syracuse, N.Y., where she worked for Carrier A/C Corp. as a secretary and was selected Secretary of the Year for Carrier Corp. In the summer of 1974, she moved with her family to Pooler, where she went to work for Southeastern A/C. In 1975, she moved to Springfield, where she later worked as the first secretary for the Effingham County Recreation Department. For years, Inez and her husband Bill worked with the Sylvania Auction Co. and she enjoyed working so much, she finally retired at the age of 85.
She was a member of Tusculum Christian Church, enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, baking, traveling, camping and spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Smalley Jr.; parents, Walter B. and Edna Reed Cardner; sons, Joseph Alan Smalley and Steven Smalley; and sister, Laura Lawrence.
Survivors are sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Pam Smalley of Pooler and Philip and Sheryll Smalley of Guyton; daughter-in-law, Ann Rogers Smalley of Sylvania; family friend, Judy Pitts of Sylvania; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside memorial services will be Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. at Screven County Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Gary Cubbedge officiating. Burial will follow. Visitation will follow the service at the cemetery.
