Sally Marie Christola (Goldwire) Stewart, 74, of York, Pa., entered into eternal rest Sunday, March 4, 2018, at York Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the Rev. Dr. James C. Stewart Jr. for 51 years and eight months.
Sally was born on January 18, 1944, in Clyo, GA to Thelma Roper Goldwire and the late Rubin Goldwire, Sr. Sally was a graduate of Springfield Central High School in Springfield, GA, Class of 1963.
Sally loved God, her church, family and friends. Sally joined Union Springs AME Church at an early age. She was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Usher Board. She served faithfully for many years until she moved to York. Throughout her life, she served in the church as a choir member, Communion steward and missionary. During Rev. Stewart's pastoralship, she served faithfully as first lady at Bethel AME Church in Marietta, Pa., St. Paul AME Church in Oberlin, Pa., and Greencastle AME Church in Greencastle, Pa., to name a few. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Sally was employed at Johnson Controls Inc. for over 20 years. Prior to retirement, she worked as a wireman, assemblyman and in the environmental service department,
Sally was preceded in death by her father, Rubin Goldwire Sr. and her brother, Moses Goldwire.
In addition to her loving husband and her mother, Mrs. Thelma Goldwire, Clyo, Sally leaves to cherish her memory five daughers: Ramona (Daniel) Chatman of Las Vegas, Nev., Rachel (Kyle) Johnson of Waldorf, Md., Vonda Porche of of Houston, Texas, Sepia Nikki (Todd) Suchanic of York and Felicia (Jeremy) Fitze of Mount Wolf, Pa.; five brothers: Rubin B. (Gracie) Goldwire Jr. of Savannah, Rev. John (Eva) Goldwire Sr. of Clyo, Dr. Franklin (Dr. Cheryl) Goldwire of Guyton, Joe Nathan (Wanda) Goldwire of Spartanburg, S.C., and Kelvin Goldwire of Clyo, three sisters: Ruth Goldwire of Clyo, Floresa (Vernon Bailey) Grimes of Athens and Dorothy (Carl) Davis of Savannah; two sister-in-laws: Dr. Nancy Stewart-Raynor of Windsor Mill, Md., and Gwendolyn Goldwire of Guyton, 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
Service and viewings were already completed at Bethel AME Church, 350 W. Princess St., York, Pa. 17401. Viewings were held Sunday, March 11, 2018, from 5-7PM and Monday, March 12, 2018, with a Celebration of Life Service at 11 a.m. Rev. Dr. Katherine E. Rose officiated. Burial took place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, York, Pa.
