JONESVILLE — Avery "Jack" R. Ghant, 90, of Jonesville, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Ghant was born in Yadkin County on Oct. 8, 1923, to the late William Earl and Hessie Gentry Gant. Jack loyally served his country in the Marines during World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired from the Marines after 30 years of service. After his career with the military, Jack started a second career with the state and retired after 20 years of service. Jack was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He was very active in the community and was well known and loved by many.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Alene Byrd Ghant; daughter, Donna Ghant Porter; brother, Fred Gant; and sister, Pauline Lyons Pike.

Mr. Ghant is survived by two children, Joyce Ghant of Charlotte and Gordon Ghant and wife Jane of Charlotte; brother, Kaline Gant and wife Dianne; sisters, Chattie Martin and husband Don and Laura Kate Gant; grandson, Patrick Ghant; special friend, Frank Disher; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Jacks wishes were for his body to be donated to science; those wishes were fulfilled upon his passing. There will be no services held.
