ELKIN — Surrounded by her family, Lexie Durham McBride departed this earth on March 17, 2014, to take up residence in heaven. Affectionately known as Ma Lexie, she will be forever missed by all who knew her. She will be remembered for her quick wit and love for her family who adored her. Ma Lexie was born in Wilkes County on Sept. 16, 1923, to Ernest Rufus and Betty Jenkins Durham. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jo Ann McBride of the home, Larry (Karen) McBride of State Road, Linda (Donald) Poplin of Elkin and John Quincy (Becky) McBride of OKC, Okla.; a special niece, Carolyn Luffman of Elkin; 10 grandchildren, Lisa Barnette, Donnie Poplin, Tracy Greenwood, Sharon Hendrix, John McBride, Beth Darnell, Amy Windsor, Jessica Griffin, Josh McBride and Holly McBride; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and a fourth great-great grandchild due in September; a sister and brother-in-law, Daisy (Phillip) Cheek of Thomasville; several nieces and nephews; and the best neighbors anyone could have, Bertie Norman and James and Carol Byrd. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Robert McBride; two sisters, Edith Burchette and Grace Couch; and a brother, Roby Walter Durham. Ma Lexie was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Ronda. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 22, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Charity United Methodist Church on Austin Traphill Road, Elkin, with the Rev. Rex Cranfill officiating. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 21, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home and other times at the home. Interment will be at Charity UM Church cemetery. The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the staff of Jonesville Family Medical Center and Dr. Thomas Shelburne for his care and the entire staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care; especially her nurse, Greg Allen, who cared for Ma Lexie allowing her to spend her final days at the home she so dearly loved.
