ELKIN — Catherine Frances Sprinkle Day of Elkin passed away on Feb. 7, 2014, at Carrington Place Nursing Facility in Matthews. Mrs. Day was born in Elkin in 1918 to Elbert Sprinkle and Myrtle Hampton Sprinkle. Recently, she had moved to the Charlotte area to be closer to her family. She was married to Grady Day of Elkin, who passed away in December 2011. They celebrated 75 years of marriage in August 2011. A life-long member of First Baptist Church of Elkin, she served in several capacities, some of which included Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, Girl's Auxiliary leader, circle leader, and the WMU. Additionally, she was a member of the Elkin Woman's Club, serving as chairperson of the Hospitality Committee and the International Affairs Committee. She served on the committee that was instrumental in the planning and development of the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Gift Shop. Additionally, she was a member of the Flower Lovers Garden Club. Among several other hobbies, she had a love of needle work and over a period of years, Catherine received numerous awards from the Elkin Woman's Club for her needlepoint. She attended Elkin City Schools and was employed in the office of Chatham Manufacturing Company. She was a past president of the Lucy Hanes Chatham Club. She retired from Spainhour's Department Store, where she was a buyer for the Children's Department. Catherine's greatest love was her family and her friends. She was a loyal wife and a great mother, and she and Grady were blessed with many wonderful friends throughout their 75 years of marriage. She was a beautiful, stylish lady, known for her kindness as well as her quick wit. She will be greatly missed. In addition to her husband, Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; and her six brothers, Tom Sprinkle, Leslie Sprinkle and Frank Sprinkle, all of Elkin, Ralph Sprinkle of Raleigh, Samuel Sprinkle of Durham and Jack Sprinkle of Winston-Salem. She was also preceded in death by a nephew, Tommy Sprinkle of Elkin. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Day Martin (Fred) of Charlotte; and sisters, Colleen Gendreau of Portsmouth, R.I., and Barbara Ward of Elkin. Her grandchildren include Mitch Martin (Lyric), Kay Osborne (Michael), and Derek Martin, all of Charlotte. Additionally, she is survived by six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Frances Harris of Elkin. The family extends a heart-felt thank you to every single staff member and volunteer at Carrington Nursing Home. You are angels from heaven. Words can never adequately express our gratitude for all you did for our mother during her last two years. You will always be in our hearts. A service of celebration will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the First Baptist Church of Elkin. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
