Howard M. Ely, 90, passed away on April 28, 2014 at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. Born in Sewaren, NJ he lived in Avenel for 54 years before moving to El Paso. His sense of humor is one of the characteristics he will be remembered for. A proud veteran of WWII he served in the U.S. Navy on board the USS Philadelphia and USS Pittsburgh. He served as an Elder and a Deacon with the First Presbyterian Church of Avenel, NJ. He also attended the United Methodist Church in El Paso, TX. He retired after 42 years working at ASARCO. In his spare time he enjoyed playing the drums in his band, The Chordiers. He was a member of the American Legion Post #58, El Paso and Disabled American Veterans Northeast #187. Howard is survived by his loving wife Edna Ely (Cook) of 67 years, his daughters Leslie Yuhasz of Carteret, NJ and Holly Ely of Avenel, NJ. Also his grandson Christopher Yuhasz of Carteret, NJ. Donations in his memory can be made to First Presbyterian Church in Avenel, NJ or Woodbridge NJ Animal Shelter. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in New Jersey.
