Long time El Paso resident and retired professor emeritus, Joseph Wallace Scruggs, passed away May 31, 2014. Wallace Scruggs was born in Baxter, Texas in 1920 to George and Mary Ellen Waddell Scruggs. He was raised by his fraternal grandparents, James Robert and Molly T. Scruggs. He graduated from Texas A&M and served as a radar operator in World War II. After the war he came to El Paso, teaching at Austin and Bowie high schools where he met his bride, Welta Conea Wright. Wallace and Welta helped start the Wedding Band Class at Trinity-First United Methodist Church where they were lifelong members. He retired from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1989 and was honored as professor emeritus after a 40 year career, teaching chemistry. Mr. Scruggs is survived by his wife Welta Scruggs, son and daughter-in-law Benton Neal Scruggs and Karen (Roberts) Scruggs, son and daughter-in-law Kermit Joseph Scruggs and Linda (Bittick) Scruggs, four grandchildren, Allan Scruggs, Neal Carty, Casey Reynolds, Patrick Scruggs, and five great-grandchildren. Wallace Scruggs will be buried in Athens, Texas. A Memorial Service is scheduled for June 21st at 3:00 p.m. at Good Samaritan White Acres (Building 200, Door 1) in El Paso.
