SALLIE GULBAS

Sallie Rosen Gulbas, 99, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, September 7, 2013. She was born in West Hoboken, New Jersey to Nathan Rosen and Sarah Friedman Rosen on October 27, 1913. Sallie married Irving Gulbas, her husband of 51 years on November 17, 1945 and they moved to El Paso making it their permanent home where they raised their three children. Mrs. Gulbas graduated from Texas Western College where she earned a degree in Secondary Education and Russian Literature. She taught Social Studies for many years and went on to be a homebound teacher until her retirement. Sallie served three years as president of Congregation B'nai Zion Sisterhood, served on the board of Congregation B'nai Zion and was editor of the bulletin "The Messenger". As a life member of Hadassah she served as president of the Business and Professional Group for the Chapter, produced the first bulletin and continued her role as editor for many years. She was the recipient of the Hadassah National Leadership award and El Paso Chapter Woman of the Year. As a member of AARP, Sallie became the first woman District Coordinator for the AARP Tax Counseling for the Elderly, a position she held for ten years. Sallie considered this volunteer work as one of the finest experiences in her lifetime. In her later years, Sallie began to paint and enjoy a new passion. She shared her artwork with family and friends and graced the halls of Monte Vista with some of her favorite pieces. Sallie was preceded in death by her husband, Irving, and brothers and sisters, Leah, Jennie, Phillip, Hymer, and Anne. Sallie is survived by her three children, Paul and his wife Ellen, Bruce and his wife Jackie, Nita and her husband Brian, seven grandchildren Brent (Shannon), Sara (Matt), Lauren (Alan), Jeff (Morgan), Drew (Michelle), Debra (Adir), and Shale, and eleven great grandchildren, Jake, Tyler, Brandon, Ashlyn, Case, Cole, Blake, Jillian, Haven, Charlotte, Holden. Sallie's children extend heartfelt thanks to her caregivers and the nursing team at MonteVista Skilled Nursing Care. Special gratitude to Sophie, Chris and Virginia who provided care, love, comfort and companionship to our Mom for so many years. Services will be held at Congregation B'nai Zion, 805 Cherry Hill Lane, on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Congregation B'nai Zion.
