Samuel John Brient (1930-2013) grew up in El Paso. He received his PhD in physics from UT Austin, and helped start the master's program in physics at UTEP (then Texas Western College). His research was in solid state physics and thin film. John taught for 35 years until retiring to Santa Fe, NM and more recently to Bogart, GA. John had a passion for physics, teaching, singing, hiking, mountain climbing in the Organ Mountains, and traveling with his wife, Mary Beth. He died of a heart attack while they were traveling in the Appalachian Mountains. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Beth of Bogart, GA; his son, Sean of Berkeley, CA; his daughter Elizabeth and husband Brad Bassler, and granddaughter, Zoe, of Athens, GA. There will be a private memorial at a later date.
