Edward Abbot Obituary
ABBOT Captain Edward W. Abbot, USN (Ret) passed away on Monday, May 23, 2011 at the age of 100. El Paso had been is official residence since 1918. He was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Class of 1933 and was a career officer in the United States Navy until his retirement in El Paso in 1958. He was decorated for eight engagements with the Japanese in World War II. During his service in the Navy he had command of four vessels, i.e. the battleship USS Tennessee, the destroyer USS Beatty, the fleet tanker USS Canisteo and the heavy repair ship USS Jason. He took part in the search for Amelia Earhart (Putnam) around Howland Island in the Pacific in 1937. He represented the United States at the funeral of King Christian X in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1947 and was a banquet guest of the new King Frederick IX and Queen Ingrid at the Royal Palace in Copenhagen. He took part in the W.W. II surrender process in Osaki, Japan in 1945. He is survived by cousins in Missouri and California. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June2, 2011 from 9:00AM to 10:00AM at Britton-Bennett Funeral Home, 110 Cedar St. Steelville, Missouri. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 11:00AM at the Steelville Cemetery and will be interred alongside his mother, the late Virginia B. Abbot, a long-time resident of El Paso, in the town of his birth, Steelville, Missouri. Services entrusted to Harding-Orr & McDaniel Funeral Home, 320 Montana Ave. El Paso, TX 79902.
