Joan Quarm Obituary

QUARM, JOAN HELENA QUARM The final curtain has fallen, the lights have faded, the house is now dark: Professor Joan Helena Quarm died peacefully in El Paso on December 28, 2010. Born in Bristol, England in 1920 to Mary and Samuel George Phelan, she spent her childhood in Gloucester, and graduated from Redding College and Cambridge University. She studied in London during the WWII Blitz and began teaching at the renowned Summerhill School under A.S. Neil. She then moved to Portugal to teach for the British Council at St. Julian's School near Lisbon, and Portugal always remained one of her favorite places. After her marriage to G. Harvey Summ, she became an American citizen and briefly lived in Washington, D.C. before moving to Peru where she taught for the American Council. There she met her second husband, Thomas A.A. Quarm, and they moved to Kitwe, Northern Rhodesia in the early 1950's followed by a move to El Paso. She retired after 30 years in the English Department at UTEP, returning to her beloved Portugal for seven years before coming back to El Paso. Almost everywhere she went--Peru, Africa, Texas--Joan founded a theater. In El Paso, there were three: The Theater, Festival, and Teatro Los Pobres-- as well as The Gilbert and Sullivan Company of El Paso, which is still ongoing after forty-five years. In the late sixties, she was awarded a federal grant to begin the first bilingual theatre group which ultimately led to the outdoor historical drama, "Viva El Paso". Her work included directing three operas for the El Paso Civic Opera Company and three operettas for the Beaumont Civic Opera. For several decades, she was the entertainment and art critic for the El Paso Herald Post and produced weekly programs on the arts for UTEP's public radio station KTEP for 10 years. Professor Quarm received numerous awards for her vast community and educational service, and was especially proud of being recognized as a Brontë authority, receiving the Minnie Piper Award for teaching excellence, and for being one of the few women to receive El Paso's highest recognition- the Conquistador Award. She is preceded in death by two sons, Robin Anthony Quarm and Christopher Noel Quarm, her beloved sister Cecilia Mary Phelan, and both of her husbands. She is survived by her daughter Susanna Summ McMahon and her sons Thomas Michael Quarm and Nicholas Jonathon Quarm. She leaves a legacy of eight grandchildren: Jennifer Boone, Catherine Watson, Sarah Barker, Christian Quarm, Anthony Quarm, Michael Quarm, Nicholas Michael Quarm, and Alexandra Welch-Quarm, and nine great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the El Paso Hospice or to the Gilbert & Sullivan Scholarship Fund in her name. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at the Scottish Rite Theatre on January 15th,2011 at 2:00pm. All whose lives she touched are invited to attend.

MEMORIAL SERMON FOR JOAN HELENA QUARM
Father A. Philip Parham, Rector, St. Alban’s Episcopal Parish
Saturday, January 15, 2011

This is a bitter-sweet time. Bitter tears. Sweet Gratitude. A bitter loss to suffer. A sweet life to celebrate.
Some losses are huge, heart-rending and leave deep wounds that stagger us. Such is the loss of Joan. The pain is mostly the pain of her absence. We rejoice that she suffers no longer. Our pain is comforted by the real presence of Christ, our healer, to whom we turn for consolation – beseeching him to fill the emptiness, lessen the loneliness and heal the hurt. Joan is sorely missed and will continue to be. Her departure has left a big hole – which we believe God in Christ will fill.

Yet we also have a life to celebrate. Some lives leave enormous blessings. Joan’s life provided many. Moments to savor. Memories to cherish. Her life was significant, worthwhile, important and is due the tribute we pay her this morning at this memorial mass and again this afternoon. She was such an exceptional lady. A wise woman of intellect and deep spirituality – she served her beloved St. Alban’s as a vestry leader, lay reader and devoted parishioner, who was always here to worship her Lord as long she could. Everyone who knew her knew she was devotee of music and the arts. She was a teacher and mentor to so many. We thank God for her long life among us. We are better for her time with us. I am so grateful to have had her as a friend.

So, we mourn a great loss. Yet we celebrate a great life. May today reflect the reality of both: the loss and the life. The best blessings are in the hearts and minds of her family and friends here today. Our choir, our priests, our readers, acolytes and worshippers offer this tribute to God and to Joan. Before we sing, pray and commune with the body of Christ the bread of heaven and in his cup of salvation, others have a word or two to share. May we hear them now? Amen.

I knew Joan from St Alban's Episcopal Church, where she graced our Sunday Mass with her beautiful reading of the Old Testament lessons. Her love of the Church and the Sacraments was an example and inspiration to all of us her fellow parishioners. May she now rest in peace.

It was an honor to know Joan. In 1998 I became a part of the Gillbert and Sullivan company, and we got along famously. I remember her strong wit, her jokes, her laugh, she was an amazing woman, and I am honored to have had her in my life, even though it was for a short time. She has always had a special place in my heart. My condolences to all the Quarm family and friends. God bless each and everyone of you.

I knew Joan my whole life--as a friend of the family, as a professor, as a director, and as a friend. Her warmth made me want to learn, her encouragement made me want to try, and her keen intellect made me want to develop my brain. Not mentioned in her obit was the fact that she was the only critic ever to achieve certification in theatre, music, and dance.

We literally will never see her like again. Vaya con dios, mi buen amiga.

What I remember best about Joan is her brilliant intellect and rapier wit. When she displayed them in tandem she was hilariously funny. Her recollections of life in London during the Blitz were powerfully riveting. Her willingness to take in strays of every stripe proved very fortunate for this writer. She is loved and will be missed.

My deepest condolences to the Quarm family. I had the privilege and opportunity to work with Joan in the G&S productions of the Mikado and Pirates of Penzance. I learned so much from her. She was articulate and passionate. She will be very much missed.

I had Joan Quarm in college at UTEP back in the glorious 1970's and she was so full of vigor and life it made you want to learn, and even more so not to let her down.

Even after graduating she was a woman I admired from a far for laughter and charisma and I wish I had spent more time with her as she made all those around her lead a more fuller life.

Thank you Miss Quarm, reading Shakespere will never be the same.

I miss you already.

My condolences to the family. I met Joan in 1992 when she directed the "Pirates of Penzance". It was my first show. She helped me a lot. She did a lot for El Paso in her life. Thanks, Joan!

I was honored to have known Joan Quarm many years ago. In the early '60s, I was active in the theatre scene in El Paso. At Texas Western College (now UTEP), and in a charming little venue that I helped inaugurate called The Theatre located on Oregon Street as I recall, Joan was always a welcome presence -- to befriend, to respect, and to review. In fact, until recently I kept copies of several of her opening night reviews of shows in which I appeared. She was an intelligent and witty lady of imposing countenance and dignity, always nice to me in person and on the page. I had not seen her for many more than 40 years, but I've never forgotten her.

To her family: I am so very sorry for your loss.

Having Joan Quarm as my colleague in the UTEP English Department was a total joy. Her wit, intelligence, and kindness were unfailing, and her reputation as an excellent instructor lives on in the thousands of students she inspired. What a life!

I had the pleasure of meeting Ms Joan about 6 years ago as she voluntered in the Medical Records Dept at Hospice El Paso. We always enjoyed hearing her stories of her many travels and looked forward to her coming in every Friday morning. I also enjoyed her speaking of her family as i drove her home on Fridays. On behelf of the Medical Records Staff, we will miss you Ms Joan.

A life long friend to the Quarms since childhood, I have always considered this most charming and elegant woman family. Memories of her politely running me off from the family refrigerator still bring a smile to my face. Such an endearing lady!

As one of the only members of her Family residing in England, I was devastated that I never got to say goodbye to my Grandmother.

I am delighted to be associated with her, and to be mentioned above. She was the Jewel of the US, and I miss her terribly.
