SALVADOR CORTEZ Obituary
Salvador Cortez, 66, answered God's call on Saturday, February 8, 2014 after a two-year battle with cancer. A devoted father, husband, musician, uncle, grandfather and friend, he was born on October 24, 1948 in El Paso, Texas and was a proud graduate of Cathedral High School ('66). He is now reunited with his parents, Enrique and Maria Cortez, and his older brother and "best friend" Fernando Cortez. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Irene, sons Steven, Phillip (Patricia), Michael (Mia), Paul and Mark; grandchildren Ivan, Cameron, Ava, Zoe, Juliette, Madeline, Olivia, Cecilia and Vincent; his brothers Enrique and Antonio; sisters Carmen, Margarita and Cecilia; and many friends and extended family. Every day we will miss you in countless ways, Honey, from horseback rides, stargazing, teaching Catechism and coaching Little League to helping us in realizing our biggest dreams. Your love and support for your five sons, for Mom and especially your grandchildren, filled the room like the sound of the jazz you played. In each of us you instilled your faith in God, taught us about love, forgiveness, perseverance, sacrifice and humility. You were an avid sports fan, were proud of the Yankees, had a love/hate relationship with the Cowboys but you taught us the importance of teamwork and playing by the rules. You leave behind a rich legacy that will continue, a song with no end, and we will do our best to make you proud, to keep the beat going. We promise! We would like to thank the many doctors and nurses that treated him along the way, including Drs. Portillo and Han, Jaime Villalva and the staff at Texas Oncology; the kind and warm people at Mesilla Valley Hospice, especially Father Don, and the fellow soldiers in the fight against cancer whom our father talked to in waiting rooms while getting treatment. Visitation will be Thursday, February 13, 2014 from 5 - 9 pm at Hillcrest Funeral Home West, 5054 Doniphan, with a rosary at 7 pm. Funeral Mass will be held Friday at St. Mathew Catholic Church, 400 W. Sunset at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Service arrangements entrusted to the care of Hillcrest Funeral Home West 5054 Doniphan Drive El Paso, Texas 79932. 915-587-0202. www.dignitymemorial.com
