SANFORD COX Obituary

SANFORD C. COX, JR. The sun set peacefully on Sanford C. Cox, Jr. on the morning of May 12, 2017. At the time of his passing, he had lived 87 years. (He would have told you he was actually 15, because it was his practice to add the two digits together and claim that was his true age.) Sanford was a staunch believer in the virtues of chocolate and Coca-Cola. He consumed them on a daily basis, and credited them for his longevity. His motto was: "A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands." Born in El Paso, Sanford called three places home: El Paso, TX; Ruidoso, NM; and Napili Bay, Maui, HI. It is intended that his ashes will be scattered in all three locations. Sanford was a patriotic citizen who faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps during the Korean War. He was a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso (then named Texas Western College) and of the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, and was an emeritus member of the State Bar of Texas, having practiced law in El Paso County for more than 50 years. He was also a dedicated participant in the El Paso County Law Library Committee, and was active in the creation of the modern law library in the El Paso County Courthouse. In his spare time, Sanford was an avid patron of learning and the arts. He established the Thurston-Cox Rho Sigma Tau Professorship at UTEP, a permanent endowment enabling the Art Department to further research in the history of early Texas art. He was a past member of the board of directors of the Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art (CASETA). He was a current member of the board of directors of the El Paso Art Association. He was also particularly dedicated to the Friends of the Westside Library and to its store, The Bookmark. Sanford is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Holly Cox; his two sons, Curtis Cox and Chris Cox; his daughter-in-law, Sylvia Cox; and his adored granddaughter, Heather Cox. A memorial in his honor will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of El Paso, which was instrumental in ensuring that his final days were comfortable and pain-free. I just learned about the passing of this lovely man. I have had the privilege of knowing Sanford and Holly for many years and it has been a delightful experience. Recently, I have served on the Acquisitions Committee at the El Paso Museum of Art with Holly. Sanford always accompanied her and, since I don't drive, they always drove me to my home. They were so much fun especially with Sanford's well-developed sense of humor. I already miss him. El Paso was indeed fortunate to have been blessed with Sanford's presence for so many years. Holly will be just fine since she comes from a long heritage of very strong women.

Sanford was a true gentleman and one of the kindest men I know. His sense of humor and genuine interest in people marked him as being a special person. Holly, you have our condolences and our prayers. Sanford has moved on but his memory will stay with those who were privileged to call him "friend". God bless.

Mr. Cox,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Sanford was one of the first members of the El Paso Museum of Art that I got to know. I looked forward to his greeting, which always included a reference to me as a "pretty girl" (I mean, who wouldn't be charmed by that?). I could always count on him for a laugh, and enjoyed teasing Holly about the challenge of keeping up with him. I will miss him very much.

Bob and I have known Holly and Sanford for years.....what a interesting pair of friends. They were great supporters of the arts and we could enjoy our discussions on just about any subject. He will be missed by all. Our sympathy to the family.
