Obituary Condolences Flowers

Longtime El Paso resident, Odene McOwen, passed away July 18, 2014. She will be missed by family and friends alike. And she had a lot of friends. Simply put, Odene loved people and people responded in kind to her generous spirit. She touched a lot of souls along the way in her 92 years, 64 of them in El Paso. She came to El Paso following the death of her first husband, 1LT Wilbert Hill, a single mom raising two sons. She later married Jay McOwen and they had a daughter. Through the years she was a working mom, managed an apartment complex, started and ran two floral shops. Deeply religious, she was a stalwart in The Church of St Clements altar guild for many years. Odene loved reading, gardening and movies. She had a great sense of humor, sassy in her day. Mostly she cared for people. She was as good a friend and mother as anyone could want or have. If a life is measured by those whom you've loved, helped or cared for along the way, then her's was hugely successful. She is survived by sons, General (ret) James T. Hill and his wife, Toni, William Hill, and daughter, Sheila Buchanan and her husband, Lt. Col (ret) Charles Buchanan; 4 grandchildren, Cpt. Griffin Hill, Blaine Buchanan and his wife Brittany, and Cara Buchanan, and one great grandchild, Liam Anthony Buchanan. One grandchild, Meghan Hill, passed away last year. Service will be held at The Church of St Clements on Tuesday, July 22 at 10AM. A reception will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of Odene McOwen can be made to , Dallas TX or CAMP Camp, Meghan Hill Memorial Scholarship Fund, PO Box 27086, San Antonio, TX 78227. Odene McOwen was a remarkable woman. It was our privilege that she walked among us.
