Heriberto (Gilbert) "Wingo" Sanchez, Jr., 69, of El Paso, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2014. Gilbert graduated from El Paso Technical High School in 1964, where he was recognized as an All-City basketball player. After high school, he entered the U.S. Navy and served as a cook for his fellow sailors. After proudly serving his country and traveling the world, Gilbert was honorably discharged and returned back home to El Paso and worked at UT-El Paso and EP Community College as the Director of Food Services. In 1983, he started his own business, La Hacienda Bakery, in the Lower Valley community of Hacienda Heights. La Hacienda Bakery was famously known for Sunday menudo and great conversation, both served by him. In 2008, Gilbert retired from the bakery business and decided to serve his community as a cafeteria administrator for Capistrano Elementary School in YISD. Gilbert will always be remembered for his work ethic and his famous brisket caterings. He was an active member of the El Paso Tech Golden Lions Alumni Association, and a proud lifetime member of the Coyotes Basketball team. Gilbert is preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Alicia Sanchez; his parents, Heriberto Sanchez, Sr. and Margarita Sanchez; brothers, Ramon Sanchez and Raul Sanchez, and sister Irma Avila. Survived by his three loving children, Eric V. Esparza, Angela M. Reyna, and Gilbert L. Sanchez (Bernadette).Gilbert was a proud grandfather to Angel R. Reyna, Damian De La Rosa, and Ella A. Sanchez. He was eagerly anticipating the arrival of his newest grandson in November 2014. He is also survived by his brothers, Jesus Sanchez (Tina), and Ruben Sanchez (Susie); sister Carmen Ruiz (Benito), and sister-in-laws Mary and Graciela Sanchez. Visitation will be held at San Jose Funeral Home-East on Tuesday, July 22,2014 from 5 to 9 PM, with recitation of the rosary at 7:00 PM. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 9:30 AM at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
