Obituary Condolences

Duane Alan Baker was unexpectedly called to his reward with the Lord on the morning of January 23, 2013. Although an extremely accomplished attorney with an uncanny knowledge of the law, he will no doubt be remembered for his generosity and caring nature, and his ability to leave a lasting impression on those who crossed his path. Duane was born on November 17, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio to Stephen Baker and Esther Davis. As a young boy, he moved to El Paso, Texas, which became his home for the rest of his life. He was a graduate of Austin High School, and upon graduation, proudly served his country which he loved until the day he died, as a member of the Army, in Vietnam. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Aircraft Crewman Badge. He graduated from the College of Mines in El Paso, Texas and received his law degree from the University of Houston. In his many years of practicing law, he gave every client and case the same meticulous attention regardless of complexity or size. He earned the respect of friend and foe alike. Despite his accomplishments, his true passion was his family. He demonstrated his love not only by his actions, but he often told each member exactly how he felt about them: that he loved them. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Isabel Baker, daughter Regina Porras and her husband Rick, son Ryan Baker and his wife Jennifer, daughter Monica Baker, sisters Stephanie Bergquist and Katharine Fultz, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Smile Train ( or to the Rescue Mission of El Paso ( The service will be at 12:45 P.M. Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at St. Patrick Cathedral, 1118 N. Mesa Street, with gravesite services following at Ft. Bliss. Services will be under the direction of Mt. Carmel Funeral Home, (915) 857-3535. The family will receive friends at their upper valley home upon completion of the services.
