Bertha Lucinda Vargas passed away March 16, 2013. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Born December 20, 1922 in El Paso, Texas. Her parents Jesusita and Roman Gonzalez preceded her in death. She graduated in 1942 from El Paso high school where she lettered in field hockey and tennis. It was on the tennis court that she met her devoted husband of 69 years, Jose R. Vargas. They married September 6, 1943, and remained together until her death. Their only separation was during Mr. Vargas's tour in World War II. They have 5 children: Bertha Yvonne (Tom Winter), Alice Elizabeth (Roberto Valdez), Joseph R. Vargas (Alma Flores), Robert M. Vargas (Rebecca Rauber), and David S. Vargas (Patrice Sovyak), 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Vargas was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren: Nicole Winter and Aviel Vargas. She was the matriarch of the Vargas clan, always a source of strength, wisdom, and knowledge. Her love of reading was a wonderful example to her children and grandchildren that opened the world up to them and made them believe that anything was possible. She was a magnificent writer which allowed her to become the marketing director at American Furniture, and Director of Fort Bliss finance department before leaving to become a fulltime mom, helping to pass those skills onto her children. She also taught Spanish for the El Paso Independent School District. Mrs. Vargas believed in the Democratic process, and in working to make her community a better place. She served as an election judge for most of her life. Her love of travel took her to Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Holland, Paris, and beyond. She loved food, taught her family how to cook, especially the art of making the perfect quesadilla. As a parent she instilled a love of the arts in her children that can now be seen in the lives and careers of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Vargas was a lifelong Catholic, sharing her faith, spirituality, and love of God with all those around her. She will be missed and her spirit will remain with all of us.
