Leona was my savior. After leaving the Army I returned to El Paso and didn't have a home. Leona offered me the incredibly generous offer to live at what is now the McCall Neighborhood Center. I ended up helping her organize the first Juneteenth. I will forever treasure those memories. I still miss your smile, your incredible wisdom and our friendship. Valerie my deepest condolences. Your work is carrying on the legacy of this visionary, tireless advocate for so many great causes related to advancing education. Your Mom was one of a kind. Her spirit lives on and continues to instill in us a sense of community. Her greatest advice to me was to seek to understand rather than being understood. Thank you for being there for this Army veteran. I will never be able to repay you for everything you did for me. I know you are up in heaven playing those beautiful songs. We will always miss you.

Ms Ford was my second grade teacher at Douglass Elementary. I will never forget that smile even when she got married I still would forget and call her Ms Ford. RIP

Leona was one of the first El Pasoan I met when I came to El Paso. I've served on many community projects and civic boards with her. She was a great person and she was my mentor. I miss her tremendously.
