Eleanor had great stories about her childhood in El Paso. Recently when people at the Historical Society (of which she was a member) were asking about the Harvey House restaurant at the Union Station, I remembered her telling us about going there with her father who liked to eat the oysters when they just came off the train!

Eleanor Duke was my mentor and faculty advisor from 1961 to 1965. I performed oxygen level analyses at her thermophilic spring research site in the mountains near Silver City, New Mexico. Dr. Duke recommended me as the athletic tutor in biology for the freshman UTEP varsity athletic teams. She lent my wife and me her apartment in Austin when we started graduate school in 1965. She offered me a world of encouragement while I was working on my Ph.D. Donna and I were fortunate in knowing Eleanor as students and later as friends. Eleanor Duke was a central figure in the lives of so many UTEP students for so many years.

It was a privilege to have known Eleanor for the past 32 years and to have been one of her "Library Bunch Buddies." We have lost a wonderful mentor and friend who shared so much of the history of El Paso and of UTEP with us. She will always be remembered with deep affection and admiration.

My mother, Cecilia Abraham, was a friend of Eleanor's. Ironically, Cecilia passed away October 31 at age 93, a day before Eleanor. They were part of a great generation. I hope they're out there somewhere writing together.

Dr. Duke was my zoology professor in 1962. That became the best and favorite course in my entire college career, leading to a life-long appreciation of the study of animals.
