Dean Walter Hawley, 87, Salem, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, in Salem.
Dean, son of the late Royal Hawley and wife Ruth, nee Merkle, was born May 14, 1926, in St. Louis. He was united in marriage to Verna Lewis May 24, 1946, in Columbia, S.C., and six children blessed their union.
Dean grew up in the St. Clair area, and graduated from St Clair High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Army
, and served in the United States during the latter part of World War II
through early 1947. After his Army service, Dean learned the carpentry trade and also became a Baptist minister. He served as a bivocational pastor most of his adult years. This took him and his family to Idaho, Washington, and New Mexico, and then back to Missouri. Two of the churches he pastored in Missouri were Elmword Missionary Baptist, Lonedell, and Mount Olive Missionary Landmark Baptist Church, Salem. Besides pastoring, Dean started a construction company in Rolla in 1967. He used carpentry skills for many years in the Rolla and Salem areas. Dean will be missed by his family and all who loved and cared for him.
Dean is survived by his wife, Verna Hawley, Salem; three children, Pat Raines and husband David, Kearney, Dr. Michael Hawley and wife Mary Jane, Ruston, La., and Angela Gray, Salem; one son-in-law, Ron Newman, Conway, Ark., one daughter-in-law, Rena Hawley, Santa Fe, N.M., one half sister, Helen Pern, Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Rebecca Newman and Christina Hawley; one son, Carroll Hawley; one granddaughter, Jennifer Raines; parents, Royal and Ruth Hawley; two half sisters, Mary Wojnarowicz and Florence Salvado; and one half brother, James Hawley.
A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Dent County Memorial Chapel, Salem, with Dr. Michael Hawley and Larry Nash officiating. Soloist was Matthew Newman. Family and friends served as pallbearers.
Interment was in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Lonedell.
