Herbert T. West(1930 - 2013)

Herbert T. West, 83, Villa Ridge, went to be with the Lord Thursday, July 18, 2013, at St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Louis.

Herbert, son of the late Albert West and wife Eva, nee Dodson, was born Jan. 30, 1930, in Eunice. He grew up in Eunice where he attended Summers-ville High School. After high school, he went to work at Wichita Bank in Kansas. As a young man, he also worked hard in Eunice on his family farm and neighboring farms. In January 1952, Herbert enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Hector during the Korean War and served until January 1956. While in the service, he received a Christmas card from a local church girl, Carol Hubbs, who was the daughter of one of the farm owners. After Carol graduated from college and Herbert was honorably discharged from the Navy, they were united in marriage Jan. 26, 1957.

Once out of the service, he began working at the Union Electric power plant in St. Louis. In 1972 Herbert was transferred to the Union Electric power plant in Labadie, where he retired in 1990. He attended the monthly retiree breakfasts on a regular basis and kept in contact with his peers.

After retirement, Herbert remained active. He was a member of the Labadie American Legion Post 565, attended U.S.S. Hector reunions across the nation and was president and treasurer of the Union Chapel Cemetery Board, Eunice. He also had a passion for fishing and Cardinals baseball.

Herbert enjoyed spending time with his family. Last year, his Christmas wish was to spend extra family time together. The family made his wish come true and was able to gather together on several occasions throughout the year. He was a loved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Eva West; and one brother, Charles West.
