Jerry Brooks Abernathy, 69, Innsbrook Village, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014, at Delmar Gardens, Chesterfield.
Jerry was born to Brooks Abernathy and wife Evelyn, nee Weick, Sept. 30, 1944, in St. Louis. He attended Roosevelt High School, St. Louis, and graduated from Harris Teachers College before beginning his career as an educator. Jerry taught for the St. Louis Public Schools. He was a lifetime member of the NEA and the president of the St. Louis Teachers Association, having led the first teachers strike in the St. Louis Public Schools. Jerry retired from teaching in 2000 after 33 years of service. He was very active in the St. Cecilia Catholic Parish and a member of the Warren County Republican Club. Jerry coordinated Mass at Harmonie Church during summers. He also was active in the Holy Rosary Parish, Warrenton, where he was a member of the Parish Council. At Innsbrook Jerry was a member of the Garden Club, Innsbrook Institute, Innsbrook Historical Society, and Poker Club. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, and loved being with his granddaughter, Samantha Mary, whenever he could.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Brooks and Evelyn Abernathy; one brother, Harold Mueller; and stepmother, Cathy Abernathy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Abernathy; one son, Jeffrey Abernathy and wife Lisa; one daughter, Rebecca Abernathy and fiance Dominique Hallan; one grandchild, Samantha Mary Abernathy, whom Jerry adored; one sister, Norma (Abernathy) Smith and husband Robert; one sister-inlaw, Shirley Hazelwood and husband Richard; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held Wednesday, May 14, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home, Warrenton.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, May 15, at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Warrenton. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at New St. Marcus Cemetery, St. Louis.
