Bernice C. Schuerkamp Obituary
Bernice Clara Schuerkamp, nee Ricker, 97, Washington, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, in Washington.

Bernice was born Oct. 17, 1920, in Granville, Iowa, the daughter of Philip and Kathryn, nee Eulberg, Ricker. She attended St. Joseph Elementary School in Granville, Iowa, and graduated from Alton High School in Iowa, in 1938.

After graduation, Bernice worked for Dr. Bolander in Primghar, Iowa, where she met Edward Schuerkamp. On May 2, 1942, Bernice was united in marriage to Edward F. Schuerkamp in Joplin. This union was blessed with five children. The couple lived in four states, finally settling in Washington in 1956.

A devoutly religious person, Bernice was a member of St. Francis Borgia Parish in Washington for 61 years. Born with a charitable and sympathetic spirit, she spent the majority of her lifetime doing for others. In addition to always making herself available to her family, she spent a tremendous amount of time collecting, repairing and making clothes for dolls to be sent to the Native American missions in the West. In later years, she turned her attention to crafting lap robes for veterans who are confined to nursing homes. In total, she sent nearly 3,000 dolls and 1,000 lap robes to these charities, and always did so anonymously. A naturally artistic person, she enjoyed sewing and crocheting and other forms of handiwork. She was also an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bernice is survived by four children, Beverly Houseman, Washington, Bonita Fitzpatrick and husband Wallace, Union, Philip Schuerkamp, Washington, and David Schuerkamp and wife Rose, Gallatin; four grandchildren, Marc Houseman and wife Christina, Dana Scharfenberg, all of Washington, Sonya Baker and husband Ernie, Holly Ridge, N.C., and Ryan Fitzpatrick, Springfield; one great-grandchild, Danielle Scharfenberg, Washington; one sister, Arloene Rains, Henderson, Nev.; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward, in 1971; a daughter, Ricke Ella, in 1948; and a sister, Esther Lynk.

A private interment was held Wednesday, Nov. 8, at St. Francis Borgia Cemetery, Washington.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Thursday, Nov. 9, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Washington, with the Rev. Joseph Wormek officiating.

The family was served by Oltmann Funeral Home, Washington.
