David Mons Benson, 79, died peacefully at his home in Topeka, Kan., Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.|
Mr. Benson was born Sept. 3, 1932, in Ann Arbor, Mich.
He is survived by his wife, Luray; four children, Kristine Gamblin, Cynthia Snoddy and husband Donald, Diana "Dee" Forshee and husband Robert, and Jonathan Benson; three grandchildren, James, Thomas and Jason; five great-grandchildren, Jamie-Nicole, Taylor, Jackson, Ava and Jacob; one brother, Frank; one brother-in-law, Robert Holsted and wife Barbara; his loving dog, Peanut; other relatives and many friends.
Mr. Benson began his career with Western Electric Telephone Company at the age of 18 in Boise, Idaho. He married his wife Luray at 19 and moved to many beautiful states in the country while working his way up through the company.
He retired several times because he just was not good at sitting around.
Mr. Benson's love of the outdoors carried through to his family. He loved his garden, boating, fishing and hunting, along with reprogramming every computer he could get his hands on.
He was a member of Lyndon Masonic Lodge, holding the office of secretary for several years.
Mr. Benson loved his church, St. Thomas Episcopal, Holton, Kan, and his friends there. He served as treasurer for several years.
He and Mrs. Benson celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Aug. 10.
A memorial service was held at Parker-Price Chapel, Topeka, Kan., Tuesday, Aug. 21.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Grace Hospice, in care of Parker-Price Chapel, are preferred.
