1928 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
John Joseph Boland, 89, Washington, passed away Friday, May 11, 2018, in Washington,

John, son of the late John Henry Boland and wife Cecelia Frances, nee Ballmann, was born Nov. 9, 1928, in Port Hudson. John received his education at Holy Family School in Port Hudson. John served his country in the U.S. Army, from Aug. 5, 1953, to May 26, 1955. On Oct. 6, 1956, John was united in marriage to Miss Marline Toben at St. Francis Borgia Church in Washington. They made their home on the Boland family farm, and six children were born to the marriage. John was a lifelong farmer. He was a true steward of the land. He loved to watch sports on television and especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren playing sports throughout the years. John also was well known in the community as a great dancer. He also was best at frying eggs. The family says, "He was the best husband ever!"^

John is survived by his wife, Marline Boland, Washington; six children, Steve Boland and wife Kay, Jeff Boland and Tammy Brueggemann, Michelle Unnerstall and husband Kurt, all of Washington, Julie Smith and husband Tom, Jerseyville, Ill., Barb Echele and husband Rob, and Joy Boland, all of St. Louis; 15 grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; two brothers, Sylvester Boland and wife Theresa, Port Hudson, and Richard Boland and wife Doris, Washington; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings, the Rev. Aloysius J. Boland, Ann Boland, Cecilia Boland, Frances Buchheit, Sister Cabrini, O.S.B., Sister Benedicta, O.S.B. and Rosemarie Nealon.

Visitation was held Monday, May 14, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Oltmann Funeral Home, Washington

A funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday, May 15, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church, Port Hudson, with the Rev. Jim Foster officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Masses may be said or memorials given to the Holy Family Cemetery Fund.

The family was served by Oltmann Funeral Home, Washington.
