Mary Carlyss Bailey Obituary
Mary Carlyss Bailey, known to most as Carlyss, nee Carter, 90, St. Clair, departed this life Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, in St. Clair.

Carlyss was born March 9, 1928, in St. Clair, the daughter of John William Carter and wife Anna, nee Arnold. As a young woman, she was united in marriage and blessed to have five children. In 1969, she began sharing her life with her life companion, Henry Lenger.

Carlyss was a Christian, having been raised in the Baptist faith and believing in the Lord as her Savior. During her working career, she was employed by Deb Shoe Company in St. Clair. She had a passion for caring for people and went on to work as a nurse's aide at St. Francis Hospital, now known as Mercy Hospital Washington, retiring after 17 years. Carlyss loved to sing and play music on her guitar. Going to music jams was a favorite hobby. She also enjoyed making jewelry and traveling. What meant the most to her was time spent with her family. Her children and grandchildren held a special place in her heart, as she did in their hearts. The love they shared and many precious memories they created will never be forgotten.

Carlyss is survived by her sons, Danny Bailey and wife Diane, Union, and John Bailey and wife Sarah, Washington; one daughter, Rhonda Ritter, Union; seven grandchildren, Shannon Bailey and boyfriend Rich Carr, Union, Amanda Reagan and husband Aaron, Dennis James Bailey, known to all as D.J., and wife Ashley, Shawnna Monroe and husband Josh, all of Washington, Michael Daffron, Union, Debbie Nugent, Paragould, Ark., and Tina Layson and husband Kurt, Jefferson City; 16 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; cousins; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her life companion, Henry Lenger; two daughters, Diana Nugent and Roxanna Bailey; two grandchildren, Daniel E. Bailey and Kevin W. Bailey; her parents, John and Anna Carter; four brothers, James, Claude, Forrest and Clyde Carter; and three sisters, Minnie Evans, Mattie Huff and Ossie Huff.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair, with the Rev. Gary Daud officiating.

Interment was in Virginia Mines Cemetery, Lonedell.
