Robert L. Sanders Obituary
Robert L. Sanders, 84, Pacific, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017.

Robert was born Sept. 17, 1933, in Gray Summit, the son of James T. Sanders and wife Anna, nee Cherry. Following his graduation from Pacific High School in 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and retired after 32 years of service. He served aboard the USS Oriskany CVA-34 in Korea; was a flight attendant and flight engineer with Air Transport Squadron 2 (VR-2); an instructor and recruit company commander at NAS Memphis; chief petty officer in charge of personnel offices at Naval Reserve Personnel Center in New Orleans; and was the 1976 Navy Serviceman of the Year in Columbus, Ohio. Upon his retirement from the Navy in 1983, he was the Navy Junior ROTC instructor at Slidell High School in Slidell, La., for 15 years. "Chief" always considered the cadets "his kids" and enjoyed keeping in touch with them after his second retirement in 1998.

Robert was active in many Masonic fraternal organizations, including Columbia Lodge 534; Mount Nebo Chapter 148 Royal Arch Masons; JeremiahCouncil 48; Ascalon Commandery 16; Gates of Derry Council 82 Knight Masons; Elizabeth St. Leger Council 386 AMD; Heart of Missouri York Rite College 188; Columbia Preceptory Yeomen of York; Knights of York Cross of Honor Priory 17; National Sojourners St. Louis Chapter 22; Heroes of '76 St. Louis Chapter 22; Sword of Bunker Hill Marquis De La Fayette Order 120; 32 Degree Scottish Rite Valley of Columbia; Alhambra Grotto, The Royal Order of Scotland; and Court of Discovery No. 80 Masonic Order of Athelstan. He also was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association and American Legion Post 320.

Robert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary E. "Puddy" Sanders, Pacific; two daughters, Lizabeth Sanders and Susan Sanders, both of Pacific; two grandsons, Russell Sanders and Alex Hoffman, both of Pacific; and one sister, Betty Baker, Pacific.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Nov. 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Nieburg-Vitt, Thiebes Funeral Home, Pacific, with a memorial service following at 7 p.m. Masonic services followed.
