William C. Key Obituary
William Chiles Key, 89, Rochester Hills, Mich., formerly of Pendleton, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, at Crittenton Hospital, Michigan state.

William was born to William Hobart Key and wife May, nee Wessel, Jan. 30, 1924, in St. Louis.

He was united in marriage to Carol W. Peterson Sept. 6, 1950, in Minneapolis, Minn. They had four children.

William graduated high school in Warrenton and then attended the University of Missouri until his sophomore year when he joined the U.S. Army. He served during World War II and was stationed on Iwo Jima.

After the war ended, William returned to the University of Missouri where he earned his bachelor's degree in political science. After marrying Carol in September 1950, he attended the University of California at Berkeley, earning a master's degree in Russian and Serbo-Croatian languages and Slavic linguistics.

William was employed by the National Security Agency. During his time at the NSA William worked on assignments for the CIA and the Department of the Army in the Pentagon. He received his Ph.D. in Slavic linguistics and Russian literature in 1965.

After retiring from the government, William went back to Missouri and attended Pendleton United Methodist Church. He and Carol were very involved with the church and loved their church family.

William is survived by four children, Sue Carol Rekart and husband Ted, Carl Key and wife Lindy, Martha Neil, and Glenn Key and wife Linda; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carol Key; parents, William and May Key; and one sister, Delphine, nee Key, Cardwell.

A visitation was held Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home, Warrenton.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 21, at noon at Pendleton United Methodist Church, Pendleton.

Burial followed in Warrenton City Cemetery, Warrenton.

Memorial donations to Pendleton United Methodist Church, in care of Martin Funeral Home, 510 E. Main St., Warrenton, MO 63383 are preferred.
