William N. "Bill" Helfrich, 91, Union, passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, in Washington.|
Mr. Helfrich was born Aug. 8, 1921, in Maplewood, the son of the late Nicholas Helfrich and wife Caroline, nee Schlereth.
He received his education at St. Ambrose and St. John the Baptist School.
Mr. Helfrich served his country in the U.S. Army from Oct. 14, 1942, to Dec. 8, 1945. He served in the Rhineland and the Northern France theatres.
Mr. Helfrich worked as a policeman for Wabash Railroad, Norfolk & Western and Norfolk & Southern Railways for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVern Helfrich, Sept. 26, 1995; two brothers, Robert Helfrich and Frank Helfrich; five sisters, Adriene Kientzle, Delores Coons, Elinor Prosser, Glorine "Cookie" Straatmann and Mary Jeanne Holtmeier.
Mr. Helfrich is survived by his daughter, Rene Ann Artman and husband Tony, Fenton; two granddaughters, Deborah Artman and Kristin Shantz and husband Eben; one sister, Carolyn Von Nida, Florida state; many other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. at Oltmann Funeral Home, Union, with the Rev. Kevin Schmittgens officiating.
Burial with full military honors followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, Villa Ridge.
Memorials to the St. Mary's Cemetery Fund are preferred.
