He married Carroll Quick Nov. 28, 1951. They were married 62 years this past fall.

Bud and his family moved to New Haven when he was in grade school. He graduated from New Haven High School. He lived on a farm outside of New Haven where he raised hogs and cattle and row cropped corn, soybeans and wheat. In 1979, along with his daughter and son-in-law, he started an agricultural retail business outside of the New Haven city limits. He loved spending his day talking with farmers and friends. He was never short of words! He resided at his farm until this past fall when health issues caused him to move to the New Haven Care Center.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Fred A. Backes and Angela Mary Backes; one grandson, Michael Hoemann; and two brothers-in-law, Leonard Banken and Leroy Quick.

Bud is survived by his wife Carroll Backes; five daughters, Jackie Weidle and husband Larry, Sharon Althen and husband James, Kim Hoemann and husband James, Kelly Toelke and husband Robert, and Paula Backes-Tanner and husband Steve; one son, Scott Backes and wife Jackie; one sister, Velma Banken; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Toedtmann-Grosse Funeral Home, New Haven.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Assumption Church, New Haven, with Father John Deken officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that all memorials be given to the New Haven Track Program or the Assumption Cemetery fund, in care of Toedtmann-Grosse Funeral Home.

The Backes family was served by Toedtmann-Grosse Funeral Home, New Haven.
