Richard James Seidel, 72, Bourbon, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at his farm in Bourbon. |
Dick, son of the late Roderick Frederick Seidel and wife Mureal Irene, was born May 28, 1941, in Olean, N.Y. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1963 with a chemical engineer degree. He worked for Gulf Oil Corp. for 22 years, Petrolite Corp. for 10 years, and was president of Napera Inc. for over two years. He retired July 1, 1997 in Harriman, N.Y., and then moved to the farm in Bourbon.
As a leader in the local community, he volunteered his time generously to many organizations. In recent times, he served on the board of the EMPAC Group Sheltered Workshop which employs people with developmental, mental, and physical challenges. He was the treasurer of the Sullivan Third Degree Knights of Columbus and a former past grand knight. He was the treasurer of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was treasurer for the Bourbon Area Community Center and an active member of the Holy Martyrs Catholic Church of Japan and loved to help these organizations.
Dick also had a passion for the outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish, hike and work on his farm. He enjoyed camping with family, hunting with family and friends, and taking various trips around the country each year. One of his favorites was the annual fishing trip to Bennett Spring, Lebanon, with his sons, grandsons and friends. He also hiked the Appalachian Trail with his best friend and hunting buddy, Ken Marley. Dick was a good friend, a great father and a loving grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Roderick Frederick and Mureal Irene Seidel.
He is survived by three sons, Gary Seidel and wife Sabrina, Wildwood, Kevin Seidel and wife Terra, Indianapolis, Ind., and Brian Seidel and wife Lisa, Greenville, S.C.; one daughter, Julie Ward and husband Eric, Greenville, Mo.; one brother, Robert Seidel, Clifton Park, N.Y.; two sisters, Shirley Bailey, Bayfield, Colo., and Judy Prince, Knoxville, Tenn.; and nine grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Holy Martyrs Catholic Church of Japan, with Father John Patrick Day officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Holy Martyrs Catholic Church, 8244 Highway AE, Sullivan, MO 63080 or The Bourbon Area Community Center, P.O. Box 104, Bourbon, MO 65441.
The Seidel family is being served by Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan.
