Nathan Shurtleff Obituary

Nathan Andrew Shurtleff was born Jan. 3, 1984, in Conroe, Texas, to Tim and Charla Shurtleff, and departed this life in Union, Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017.

Nate was handsome, intelligent, kind, gentle, loving, generous, brave, compassionate, creative, musically and artistically gifted and a great joy to his family. We will miss him all the days of our lives. Nate moved to Missouri with his family when he was 5 years old, and subsequently graduated from Pacific High School, East Central College and attended the University of Missouri, St. Louis, just short of his BA degree. Nate began work at an early age, holding a variety of jobs, and then worked for Wal-Mart in Eureka for the past five years. Nate is best known for his total devotion to and unconditional love for his only child, Lyric Shurtleff, whom he shared with his lifelong friend, Paula Rieger. Nate struggled with many health issues, including a traumatic brain injury received in a car accident in his early 20s and subsequent mental health issues. Yet, these challenges did not prevent Nate from being one of the most amazing fathers this world has ever known. Lyric demonstrates all of the positive characteristics of his father and is resilient and wise beyond his 8 years.

Nate was preceded in death by his brother, David Shurtleff, and his grandparents.

Besides his beloved Lyric, Nate leaves behind his parents; his sister, Miriam Courtois; his brother, Micah Shurtleff; his nephews, Zane and Jayson Carter; and his nieces, Zoe and Alexis Shurtleff, as well as many extended family members and friends.

Per Nate's wishes, a private family gathering is being planned to honor and celebrate his life.

In remembrance, contributions may be made to an education fund being established for his son, Lyric. Donations can be sent in care of Charla Shurtleff, 273 Coventry Valley Road, Villa Ridge, MO 63089.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the understanding and support from family members, friends and co-workers during this very difficult time.

Nate,

Many of our youthful years were enriched with music, laughs, fellowship, and respect. To call you a friend was, and still is, paramount to me. Memories are special as they are an enigmatic aspect of our minds' which are deliberately designed to be forever impressioned. In this enlightenment, you never left, and we are still connected. To host you and Lyric for Christmas in 2015 was nothing short of exciting. I'm thankful to have caught up on a lost ten years of being in touch. My family will never let you go. Like we agreed in our vulnerable, teen years, we will meet again on the "Crazy Train."
