A private memorial service for immediate family members will be held in Estes Park for Dorothy Menke Retrum who died on July 24, 2013. She was 96 years old.
Dorothy Retrum was the daughter of William and Clara Moenkaus Menke. She was born
November 29, 1916, in Huntingburg, Indiana. She attended Stephens College where she received the Degree of Associate in Arts. Then she attended Indiana University
where she graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Her major was in foods and nutrition. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. After a year spent as a dietetic intern at the Indiana School of Medicine and Hospitals in Indianapolis, she became a member of the American Dietetic Association and a Registered Dietician. She worked in hospitals in Ohio, Indiana, and Missouri. She spent several years as a consultant to the cafeteria services of the Waterloo, Iowa, public school system.
On April 3, 1943, she married Rowland Retrum, an Officer in the United States Navy
. They were married in the Salem Evangelical & Reformed Church in Huntingburg, Indiana. After World WarII, she and her husband lived in Indiana, Iowa, and Missouri. They moved to Estes Park, Colorado in 1981, after her husband retired from the Ralston Purina Company in St. Louis, Missouri. In Estes Park, she was a member of the Community Church of the Rockies, a member and past president of Chapter HF of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a member and past-president of the former Elizabeth Guild Society of the Estes Park Medical Center, and the chairman of its 1987 Holiday House Event. She served for a number of years on the Board of the Estes Park Music Festival.
She is survived by her two sons, William Stephen Retrum of Estes Park, Colorado, and John Sigurd Retrum and his wife, Brenda, of Golden, Colorado, three grandsons lver (Jessica Haxton Retrum), Jack, and Brian Retrum, one great granddaughter Miah Riley Retrum and by many nieces and nephews that she loved and enjoyed. She is also survived by one brother, Allen Carl Menke of Evanston, Illinois.
Her parents, husband, an infant daughter, Ann Katherine, and two brothers, William C. Menke, a Navy Pilot who lost his life during World War II, and Robert H. Menke formerly of Huntingburg, Indiana, preceded her in death.
Allnut Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements. Following the cremation, the ashes will be interred at the Columbarium of the Community Church of the Rockies.
